Includes Notes for Barbara Mason:
According to family records represented by Dorothea M. Smith in writing on behalf of Mrs. Ralph Mason, R 1, Dillsboro, IN, " John Biddle was a carriage maker."She also indicates that Barbara Mason died in 1829 and that she was of Swiss heritage. Furthermore, it is her belief that John Biddle of Fayette County, PA was the direct descendant of Andrew Biddle (Immigrant)(1735-1812)to this country around the late 1750s or earlier. Andrew was a Lt. in the Revolutionary army. He had eleven children, and his eldest son's name was Jacob. Andrew was married to Christina Cover in Frederick, Maryland 1766. The eldest son Jacob married Rachel Todd and moved to Blair County, PA, in 1785. Andrew also had a son named John, who was born 178_? Her supposition is that John and Jacob were brothers.
There can be little doubt that John Biddle (Bittel) spoke German.
He married Barbara (Maurer). Mason is the English translation of the German term Maurer. A Maurer is a "mason," such as a bricklayer. Records at the Jacob Evangelical Lutheran Church in these early days suggest John's German surname was Bittel. People during colonial America generally stayed together in family and community. When one moved -they all moved together. There was a pioneering spirit despite the adversities. A sense of German society and family was therefore held together for mere survival.
Conflicting events seem to appear when the youngest son, Jacob Benjamin Biddle, reports- or members of his family convey- that John Biddle died in Kentucky well over 90 years of age and that his wife lived a little bit longer. It is said that she also died in Kentucky. Another report indicates otherwise: it states that both John and Barbara were dead by 1829. George Mason's will- Barbara's father- it noted that Jacob was in line for inheritance and orphaned. Indeed, Jacob had to have legal guardians. Yet, it is from the Jacob family that a conflicting report emanates. Still another account has John dying and being buried in Tipton County, Indiana.
The Mason family appears undoubtedly to be the foundation on which a pioneering spirit was instilled into these families. Barbara Mason's father, George, was one of the survivors of the Lochery Massacre, and other survivors married into the Mason family. For instance, Christain Fast married Barbara Mason's sister, Anna Barbara. He was part of the German contingent that marched with the Pennsylvania Volunteer Brigade under General George Rogers Clark. Barbara Mason's uncle John Mason is credited in history as having built one of the finest forts in the area. The structure seemed so imposing that Indigenous people who were at war with colonists would pass it by and decline to attack Fort Mason. John also donated land to form Germantown, PA, and the site was renamed later in honor of John Mason to Masontown, PA.
