I’ve noticed that birthdays of dead people are being announced and when it gives their age it makes it look like they are still alive.

Is there any way we can change this?

Maybe deaths should be announced on Geni and filed.

Two deceased people who have had birthdays announced on Geni are Cynthia Bluman and Alvin Gelmon.

John,

Private was updated to mark her as deceased LITERALLY five minutes after your post, how on earth is the Geni software system supposed to know that she is dead 2 weeks before anyone updates the profile??

Private was only marked as deceased in May, any birthday message would have been sent in March. So again how is the software supposed to know a person is dead if none of the managers or family members are updating the profiles??

It's understandable that a birthday reminder for a deceased relative might be distressing but it's up to managers and family members to update their profiles not Geni.

Cynthia Bluman died March 6, 2021 and Alvin Gelmon died March 9, 2019. That means there would have been two automatic birthday notifications for Cynthia Bluman after she died and three for Alvin after he died.

I’m not being critical or trying to get into a debate or complaining.

Just providing constructive FEEDBACK (not criticism) and wondering if there is a way we can do something about this. If I don’t say anything, how would anyone know or how would I know that anyone knows? I certainly am not saying anyone neglected to do something they should have done.

Unfortunately, I can’t know when everyone dies. But, when I know I of a death, for instance, should I notify someone at Geni?

I’m happy to help when I can and would like to know of who to contact privately for things like this or even manage things on Geni myself.

One great thing about Geni is it lets people know someone is alive after so many years. My great-aunt Ruth Knelman lived to be 5 days short of 112 (died May 16, 2022) for instance. Unfortunately she was on a different side of family and her birthday wasn’t registered with Geni. But my point is birthdays like that are fascinating, if person is alive.

This isn’t likely to happen, but IF I LIVE 50 more years I think it would be fascinating for people to see on Oct. 19, 2072 that « John Gelmon turns 107 today. »

And I’d also, if practical, have no problem with Obits or death notices being posted on Geni or even birthday notifications of a dead person if they say something like the person would be this age if still alive. Yahzreits might be a good idea too, if practical.

I also want to stress I NEVER said anything about it being distressing for family members of the dead to see notifications of their birthdays. That was not my point or concern. If they don’t tell you, I can’t see them getting too upset with Geni.

I just like seeing that a person is a certain age on a certain day, if he/she really is.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we can count on family members to always notify Geni of a death, especially when there are people like me who are uneducated on how to connect with Geni. Be nice, but won’t always happen.

One thing I can do is when I see a birthday is coming up Google their name and get back to you or another Geni manager. And MAYBE when I do that Geni can update the info by saying this person died?

It’s the reporting of accurate and updated information I’m talking about. Like my late father Joseph N. Gelmon, I was a journalist and strive for this.

Information will not always be entirely correct or up to date. But it’s always something everyone in the world can work on and I’m very happy to help.

John Gelmon a Geni user can be reported deceased from the action menu on their profile.

For non users, only managers or users in the family group are allowed to edit the profile.

Geni allows profiles with a birth date more than 150 years to be marked deceased by curators and if there is no privacy related info in the profile to mark them public af well

Thanks! Who is considered a “user group in the family?”

Am I, for instance, considered a person in the family of any cousin?

If not, any way I can connect with managers of dead people?

I should tell you that my cousin David Kosatsky, DOB April 15, 1957, died on April 22, 2022.

You can go to a profile and use the actions menu to see claimed users in its family group (View claimed family). Like for your profile: https://www.geni.com/list?claimed_status=claimed&focus_id=6000000006864412262&group=max_family

So if you go to your cousin's profile Private and use the actions menu Report to report him deceased to Geni staff.

It will probably take a few days to process and they will probably contact you.

You can see more about the family group here: https://www.geni.com/privacy and you might also want to look at https://www.geni.com/account_settings/family and https://www.geni.com/account_settings/managed_profiles
