Riddle, Hugh 1726/7 appears in the Andover MA town records. Also on this list are John Cofferin (Cochran) John Telford, John Cromme or Crombie, Thomas Richardson “Irishman” , Joseph Waugh, Alexander MacCartney (Irish man) and James, John and Samuel Seaton. Andover was said to be a winter settlement 5 to 10 miles East of Dracut.. Here Bolton references Parker’s History of Londonderry. (Bolton 199) Bolton refers Shute petition signer of 1718 as Thomas Grow as one of those who remained in Andover after his company moved to Nutfield per an order of poor relief raised to Andover taxpayers in 1719 (Bolton 200-201). Another Andover settler was William Bolton who came from Coleraine, Ireland and married at Andover in 1719/1720 but died soon after in Reading, MA leaving two sons William and John. These Ulster Scots were probably tenant farmers as suggested by Bolton as he states the “Land was difficult of purchase in an old town like Andover.” Although Bolton doesn’t explain specifically why he believes this to be the case except for these Ulster Scots being “transient” or in other words they were not permanent settlers in MA.

One of the reasons was likely that the Puritans had control of MA Bay Colony and probably had some objections to Presbyterianism practices. Bolton suggests that other members of Scots Irish Migration went to Haverhill, Bradford and Dracut before going to Nutfield, Londonderry, NH. But, it is not clear if it was specifically the transient Andover colonists or if the Andover Ulster Scots went directly to Nutfield later incorporated as Londonderry township New Hampshire.

It has been said that both Massachusetts and New Hampshire claimed authority over Nutfield, (Londonderry township) at the same time. This is clearly seen in the State Papers of New Hampshire. [source citation] where they discuss where the boundary line should be. Shute was involved in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire government. So, he probably held sway on the decision of the final boundary line.
