Hugh Barnard Zichy NANKIVELL Writes:

Managers of Sir John Yorke, Kt., of Gouthwaite,

I am contacting you about this profile: https://www.geni.com/people/Sir-John-Yorke-Kt-of-Gouthwaite/6000000...

I note that you have the parents of Sir John Yorke of Gouthwaite (born 27th. January 1592 - died 1638) recorded as being Sir John Yorke and Julian Yorke (nee Hansby).
I believe that this is incorrect.

From what my research indicates that he was the son of the elder Sir John Yorke's next younger brother, Thomas Yorke and his wife Frances Yorke (nee Babthorpe); that the elder Sir John Yorke's next younger brother Thomas predeceased his elder brother Sir John Yorke, and that the elder Sir John Yorke was succeeded in the Gouthwaite Estate, by his nephew the younger Sir John Yorke, son of Thomas Yorke and Frances Yorke (nee Babthorpe). The elder Sir John Yorke and his wife Julian Yorke (bee Hansby) had no children, or, if they did have a child or children, none of them survived their father, the elder Sir John Yorke.

I will be grateful if you will review your entry for the parents of the younger Sir John Yorke (1593-1638). I am descended from the younger Sir John Yorke and his first wife, Florence Yorke (nee Sharpe). Everything that I have read about the younger sir John Yorke (1593-1638) shows that his parents were Thomas Yorke and Frances Yorke (nee Babthorpe). You may also wish to check out the relevant part of the book entitled 'Yorke Country' by Anne Ashley Cooper - ISBN 0 9511112 21 White Crescent Press Ltd,Luton, Bedfordshire, England. I advise that in my opinion there is an error in this book that relates to Frances Yorke (nee Babthorpe), which refers to 'The Journal of Nicholas Assheton of Downham'. I have read the relevant parts of Nicholas Assheton's Journal, and can find nothing in it that establishes Frances Yorke's (nee Babthorpe's) mother as being Frances Dawnay (who was Sir William Babthorpe's (1529-1581) second wife. There is a footnote in the book entitles 'The Yorkshire Papists' that states that Thomas Yorke's second wife, Frances Yorks (nee Babthorpe) was a full sister of Katherine Babthorpe, who was a daughter of Sir William Babthorpe (1529-1581) and his first wife Barbara Babthorpe (nee Constable).

It is of interest to note that Katherine Babthorpe's second husband was John Ingleby of Ripley Castle, who ws also referred to (with his wife Catherine Babthorpe) in the book entitled 'The Yorkshire Papists'.

Perhaps of further interest is the fact that the abovementioned Catherine Babthorpe's first husband was Sir George Vavasour of Spaldington, Yorkshire. Sir George Vavasour and his wife Catherine Babthorpe had a daughter, Frances Vavasour, who was the first wife of the Thomas Yorke referred to above, but she appears to have died you, without any child or surviving child.

I will also be grateful if you will, in due course, let me know whether you will amend the younger Sir John Yorke's recorded parents to be Thomas Yorke and Frances Yorke (*nee Babthorpe).

Thanks much for relaying, Erica. I believe the correction was made--be sure to let me know if you spot anything further. Best regards, Nathan

Sir John Yorke, Kt., of Gouthwaite Had been adjusted to son of Thomas Yorke, of Parcevall Hall and Frances Yorke but I believe it’s supposed to be Frances Yorke

Found a chart.
