I've been told since I was little that our actual last name should be Back. And there's a chance that Elizabeth wasn't even Alfred's mom. That Alfred's biological mother was a sister to Elizabeth who lost her husband (Alfred's Dad) and had a mental breakdown & Elizabeth & later on Hiram Adopted Alfred & changed his name to Miller....Does anyone know the true story of Alfred's Biological parents?

I have researched this quite a bit since working on family history. Some of it is true, yet some of it cannot be.
Hiram was born Feb 17, 1818 and died April 17, 1863. He was killed in civil was by Capt Bill Strong who was Elizabeth’s cousin.
Alfred was born Feb 27, 1869 and died Dec 20, 1933. He was born nearly 3 years after Hiram Miller had died. No way he could have adopted him and changed his name.
My mother who is a descendant always said her grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee of which both Elizabeth and her siblings were.
I also found a story about being Backs instead of Miller. So I dug around and found Elizabeth’s sister Malissa Strong Back was married to Alfred Back. She and Alfred had no children , however it does list on Malissas Find A Grave memorial notes (put in by her great grand daughter) that she had children who did not belong to Alfred Miller. Some were by a South and some were children of Miles Wilgus Back. It listed those childrens names. However on the end it says she had another child by Miles Wilgus back after her husband Alfred Back died in 1874 so that couldn’t be our Alfred Miller born in 1863.
If you follow the census, you can find her children living under their names with family members, so I determined a first names was changed either. No child of Malissa disappears to where you don’t know where they went.
I also went and looked at Miles Wilgus Backs Find a grave and found photos of him. To my astonishment my great uncles looked just like this Miles Wilgus Back. I even have a uncle named Wilgus and my younger brother was named Wilgus. If you search it up you will see the same resemblance and know you are a Back and not a Miller.
Elizabeth is listed on Hirams death certificate but no father. However I have heard he was close with the Back family. It may have been he was too young to know if Elizabeth was his biological mother or if he just chose to list Elizabeth because she raised him. Or another scenario I came up with was that possibly Elizabeth also had a relationship with this Miles Wilgus Back and named him after his brother Alfred. Both sisters worked for the Back’s before any relationships. Alfred Back is said to have no children due to a injury he received in the civil war. But then again one wonders if Elizabeth had an affair with Alfred Back while her sister was with Miles Wilgus Back and they actually had a child and she named him Alfred after his real father or after his uncle. I do not know which it would be. Being that she was 16 years older than him could have been the reason the real story was not told. I cannot find pictures of Alfred Back but have found pictures of his Back brothers and there is not doubt in my mind that Hiram Miller’s father was a Back whichever scenario is correct. My great imcle JC Miller looks just like Miles Wilgus Back as well as his Back brothers so I know we are descendants of the Backs. I have not found a birth record for Hiram
Miller to find if he was Elizabeth or Malissa’s child. Still digging…
I am grand daughter of Daymond Pittman Miller. I never knew him. His father was Alfred Miller.
Who are you descended from?

I have searched and see you are the Grand son of JC Miller. My mother’s uncle JC. My mother thought the world of your grand father. He was a brother to my grandfather. The photos of Hiram Miller I have found do resemble this Miles Wilgus Back and that resemblance can be seen on your grand father. Miles Wilgus Back had a lot of children by different women, so he did indeed get around. I have not yet found a birth certificate for Hiram Miller only a death certificate.

Cora,

Thank you for sharing with me what you've found about our family! Yes, my Dad's name was Jay C. Miller & J.C. Miller was my Pappaw. I spent a ton of my childhood at Mamaw & Papaw's house on Elk Creek Rd. In West Middletown Ohio. I didn't know Daymond or any of the Miller's in Kentucky very well at all. I do remember going with Mamaw & Papaw down to Kentucky to visit his family but I was so little I have barely a memory of the trip.

Maybe it will always be a mystery but I think there's sufficient anecdotal evidence that from Alfred down our male biology is from the Back clan... Which I'm sure you've seen goes back to Germany where it was spelled Bach, & our ancestor was a very close relative to Johann Sebastian Bach!

BTW our first grandaughter was named Ivy Kora Miller... They went with the K instead of the C for some reason. lol

If you find anything else out, please share & I'll do the same!

Thanks, Chris
