His mother is Mary "Polly" Smith, daughter of Ericus Smith and Bridget Anderson. For unknown reasons, her last name is sometimes reported as Goff but I've seen no documentation for this. Mary had Thomas Smith out of wedlock then married Ephraim "Eaf of All" Hatfield. They had a son named Ericus Hatfield and a daughter named Lydia Bridget Hatfield; the naming conventions of the time indicate that this is the correct family connection. Their other children included a son named Valentine who settled on Horsepen Creek (same area where Thomas Smith settled).
From Ragland's History of Logan County: "Valentine Hatfield married a Miss Weddington, and he was a half brother of Thomas Smith".
Mary Hatfield shared in the division of Ericus Smith's property in 1797 according to https://www.theheritagelady.com/jerry-hatfields-compiled-genealogy/...
"Dispersal of land of Ericus Smith:

Ephraim & Mary Hatfield, Joseph & Rachel Smith sell to Aly Smith, 94
ac., part of an old 200 ac. tract (no witnesses)

Mary Hatfield; Joseph & Rachel Hatfield, now of Lee Co, VA--sell to
Ericus Smith, 106 ac. on Thompson's Creek, part of 200 ac. granted to
Ericus Smith, decd. (no witnesses)
"This one is a slam dunk. It's the law. Only children of Ericus Smith have the legal right to sell his land... Both the wives of Joseph and Ephraim Hatfield are daughters to Ericus Smith" [Mary's sister Rachel was the much-younger second wife of Ephraim Hatfield's father Joseph. Rachel was both stepmother and sister-in-law to Ephraim]
