I have been researching Stagners for a long time. I believe that there is some misconception and confusion about the father of Talbert Stagner. First of all there is no doubt his name was John Stagner, and for this discussion let’s refer to him as John4 Stagner. Who knows where Talbert was born 1850-1870 censuses all different, NC, TN, KY!

There seems to be general confusion. There were two John Stagners in KY at the same time, who were born about the same time in NC. One John3 Stagner was found in Warren County, John4 Stagner was found in Trigg and Calloway Counties. He died in Calloway County. John4 Stagner can be traced back to Montgomery and Stewart County, TN where he was first found in 1812. The other John3 Stagner was found first in Warren Countyin 1800 census. He remained in records until his death 1842. I am descended from this John3. It is estimated that this John was born about 1766 and in NC. His father, again a John2 Stagner, was also found Warren County until approximately 1820 after which he disappeared from records. No record has been found indicating where and when he died. This John2 Stagner is believed to be the first son of John1 Barney Stagner(1714-1766).

It seems that John3 and John4 are confused by many researchers as being the same person. They definitely are not. It is not clear who is the father John4, but is not very likely John2. My suspicion and I cannot prove this, but the most likely candidate is a Henry Stagner, who was found in Sumner County, What kind of supports this is that John4 had another son named Henry, brother to Talbert. This requires further research and this record requires the following changes::

Name-John Stagner
Birth-1771 North Carolina
Death- about. 1851, Calloway County, KY
Place of Burial - no known-what is shown is for John3.
Mother - unknown
Andrew J Stagner shown as a son is not correct. This Andrew Stagner was a son of John2. This should be obvious because Andrew lived in Warren County.

This should remain a master record.
