Bethania H. Cost / Ozley / Johnston

Has two sets of parents and unsure that either are correct. The profile on Find a Grave has a contradictory bio to the stats in the location fields there.

Bio there states that she was born in South Carolina. Not sure how she is born in Tennesee too.

Bethania Lindsey, wife of Elbert Lindsey, was the former Bethania Cole, a widow. She was on both the 1840 and 1850 census in Newberry County, born ca. 1803 in South Carolina. In 1850, Bethania lived with her son-in-law, Henry M. Hunter.
There is a court case that involved Bethania Cole Lindsey and her second husband, Elbert Lindsey

Family Search is even more confusing

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K4GD-61C

Says that Barthenia was married to Gilbert Ozley, Eli Cost, and Thomas Johnson.

There is a source link of a divorce from Gilbert Ozley on his profile, They had a son named Amos, for Bethania is with him in 1880 census in Alabama.

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M4JJ-2MB : 13 January 2022), Bartheny Johnston in household of Amos Ausley, Geneva, Geneva, Alabama, United States; citing enumeration district , sheet , NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), FHL microfilm .

Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
*Amos Ausley Self Male 33 Alabama, United States
*May Ausley Wife Female 36 Alabama, United States
*Henry Ausley Son Male 11 Alabama, United States
*Claudianor Ausley Daughter Female 9 Alabama, United States
*James N. Ausley Son Male 7 Alabama, United States
*Joseph A. Ausley Son Male 5 Alabama, United States
*Huldy C. Ausley Daughter Female 1 Alabama, United States
*Bartheny Johnston Mother Female 81 Tennessee, United States

Family Search indicates that she married Eli Cost, then Thomas Johnson. Cost was the brother to Johnson's first wife. But there was the divorce of Gilbert Ozley. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C3S6-Z3MS-H

Then what of the attached parents of Bethania H. Cost / Ozley / Johnston

David Elijah Lindsey, II and Mary Lindsey or

Thomas Lindsey and Elizabeth Lindsey

Thomas is attached to David Lindsey Jr. and Mary Lindsey as a son to further complicate matters. Thomas is not listed on the DAR records as a son of David Jr. and Mary.

Please advise or provide information to help clean up this profile if you have any.

Find a Grave is really interesting on Bathania implying she married twice - Noting in the bio that she was a widow Cole, but children are all COSTS, she married second the Reverend Elbert Lindsey the first pastor of Hurricane Baptist Church.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/96786844/thomas-johnston

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/13119980/bethania-h-lindsey

The connection on FAG is the daughter of Bethania - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/118386870/rebecca-johnston

I think some of the confusion is with

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/179505504/thomas-johnson

and

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/96786844/thomas-johnston

Thomas Johnston https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/96786844/thomas-johnston had a daughter listed as Martha Johnston Cost
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/97523090/martha-cost and she had a son named Eli Cost https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/33226852/eli-cost , but he would have been too young to be married to Bathania's husband Eli.

Hi Cousin Susanne, i was notified recently by a man from Clan Lindsey in Scotland that this Lindsey line is a total mess. I believe the ones i added are correct. Anything past what i added i have no idea about. This is the line i was telling Erica Howton about recently as well. The person that contacted me did not offer any help, just criticism.

Hi Cousin Beverly Renee Hallman Marsh, Gedmatch Kit #XK9447597! Thanks for your reply, yes it is in a "fine mess" and I am not sure where to start. Will see if I can find anything about the Lindsey family. Hopefully there is something.

I found the problem when I had a conflict on General Lafayette Johnson who may be a son of Bethania and Thomas Johnston/Johnson. I honestly believe that the two Thomas Johnsons noted above are part of the problem. Need better sources. Hope to find them. May take a while.

I have a Johnson/Johnston line and so maybe I can find something to straigthen that part out, but then there are the Lindsey lines and that is learning something new. :-)

Just posting some resources for futher research when I can come back.

Search for the ancestry of Jacob A. (Abel or Abram) Lindsey (1806-1876), who married Emeline Catherine Jane Hamilton, and lived in Georgia, moving later to Banner, Calhoun County, Mississippi. It is thought he might possibly be a descendant of Thomas Lindsey (1721?-1769), who moved to Frederick County, Virginia about 1735. Descendants and relatives lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and elsewhere. Includes research notes of an extensive search of various kinds of records in Georgia, including land, probate, pension records, etc.

This one looks promising David Lindsey family of Alabama:

I will be back....

Thank you for working on this...i wish a curator would help. I told a few of them not long ago that a Lindsey Clan member said it was a mess...hopefully one of them will help. Im not a researcher lol.

Per census records, she was born about 1803. Adjusted date.
Other changes can be seen on the revisions tab.

I think she is fixed now.

Still need proof of parents.
She was apparently married four times.

Yep, still a mess. I don't know any more than I posted, Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087. I wish I did. Off the grid right now for a while.

Susanne Floyd not a mess now lol
Just needs source for parents if they are correct

There are zero inconsistencies and I added links that can help folks connected to her but she is not a direct or a close relative to me so I made sure her husbands and her children were all correct.
She is probably pretty close to being able to ask for her to be MP'd

I found almost nothing on Rev Elbert Lindsey

I think I found a will for him and added a link but no marriage record-- just the FAG showing them connected.
She married him, they say
Then she was Barthany Lindsey married Eli Cost 12 Apr 1837 at Bibb, Alabama, USA
next Theny Cost married Gilbert Ozley 21 Jun 1846 at Shelby Co, Ala or 20 Jan 1846-- I found two different records so may need to check whether is license obtained vs marriage recorded
Last married Thomas Johns(t)on and died with his name outliving him.

Happy New Year

I am happy I could work on her and I hope others will pick up where I left off.

No Elbert. Can't have married him second... Her FAG says: Bethania Lindsey, wife of Elbert Lindsey, was the former Bethania Cole, a widow.
Elbert Lindsey
1800–1862

I think this is a different couple

There are NO Ancestry hints for him on his Findagrave memorial which I am finding often means the memorial has errors and no hint found

Also-- she is NOT a "Cole widow". Disconnecting from him as spouse.

Found this cleaning out my pictures just now!:
