I read up on it but I still do not quite understand. Do the gateway ancestors have to be a direct ancestor like grandparents to parents? Or can it be like a cousin so many times removed? I am learning so much from all of you.

I had never heard of the term. Googled it. Found https://historyhouse.co.uk/articles/gateway_ancestor.html
"Gateway ancestor is a term used in genealogy.

It means that when researching a family tree you discover that one of your ancestors is descended from royalty, the aristocracy, or landed gentry."

An "ancestor" means a direct ancestor.
One of your cousins x times removed may be somebody's gateway ancestor - but not yours.
