Display name

Long time ago, before Geni introduced all those additional fields, we only had Name, Surname, Display name. We were using this field a lot as there was no much else you could do to show all the variations in a person's name.

BUT - this is no longer the case.

Since then, Geni added prefix, Suffix, Multilingual fields (almost unlimited number of fields), additional labels and so on..

Some of our users still use it and in most cases does not do any harm, BUT lately I have been encountering cases where this is really problematic.

Shortening names and surnames, creating names which are unrecognizable.

Croatian name don't have first and middle name, all names are equally important. Deciding to create a display name by randomly choosing one of the given names is not helping. Families often had children with the same name - Ante Ivan, Ante Santo, Ante Marko could have all been siblings. Deciding that one of those names is more important than the rest is wrong. PLEASE DONT DO IT, at least not on profiles you share with others.

Same goes for surnames - many places on Dalmatian coast, used multiple surnames. for example Mrkušić Kurtić - this is a single surname - there is no part of this surname more important than the rest. People who are related to this family will know - you cannot shorten this surname into the single one.

So be careful with a display name, if you are not certain, dont use it, leave the name as it is. DONT USE IT AT ALL.

I agree and second everything that has been said regarding Croatian names and surnames.

This is a very important topic and I thank you for discussing it as I also have had problems as there a number of factors involved in the recording and transcription of names.

Among the problems in recording names: the date of the historic record, the alphabet and phonetic system used in recording the name, the culture and customs of the population, who recorded the name, and the degree of literacy among the general population, etc.

In Split, we are generally dealing with records dating from the very late 17th century to the early 20th century during which all of these factors played a role in the recording of names. (For Croatians who moved to other countries, that can be another factor.).

The important thing is that Geni users standardize the way names are entered to ensure accuracy and eliminate confusion.

Unfortunately, I am on a business trip and don’t have the time to do some research and make suggestions until next week. But when I return home in a few days, I will look at the issue more carefully and try to make some suggestions that may help us all.

I apologize for not responding in Croatian but my Croatian is not that good. I especially thank Jadra for her post. Thanks

looking forward to continue this discussion. The reason I started this - I try to give tips to people, but to reach as many as possible - this is far better option, plus we might get some concensus.
As per Croatian vs English. maybe a good idea is to translate my initial post - many users are not fully aware of how often Geni introduces new options.

polje "Prikaz Imena"
Kada je Geni tek poceo (oko 2007) nije postojalo dovoljno polja za unos imena, Osim imena i prezimena, jedina opcija je bio "prikaz imena" - svi smo to koristili jer drugih opcija nije bilo.
U medjuvremenu, Geni je dodao puno drugih opcija, Titula, Sufix, i skoro beskonacan broj visejezicnih unosa. .

PLEASE DONT DO IT, at least not on profiles you share with others.

Postovana,

hvala vam na Informaciji. Mozete li mi reci gdje ili poslati link gdje se upisuje prefix, Suffix, Multilingual fields (almost unlimited number of fields), additional labels itd. Nisam uspjela na Help polju taj odgovor naci. Hvala unaprijed.

I think I'm part of this problem and need some help please! I can't figure out how to correct the profile data because some details get lost in translation for US immigrants. Besides profiles inherited from others, there are a few who had multiple documented spellings, or names were spelled phonetically, or they were intentionally misleading for fear of military conscription. As an example for Croatian ancestors, I took a guess at the original spelling of my GGF Joe's last name [Yovan Sliephevich based on listing his brother/cousin [Luka Slijepcevich in Census records around that time. I presume cousin, but I don't have a way to prove their relationship. And, after being away from Geni for an extended time, I see locations updated, some incorrectly. All of Slavonija became Slovenia instead of Croatia. Some, like these 2 profiles, changed to one of a few possible locations depending on the year, the translator, and the political climate at the time.
Here are some examples of my GGF and his cousin's multiple name spellings between 1916-1930 along with birth places recorded in USA documents 25+ years after their births https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000185397803866
Are their profiles okay as they are with possible errors or should I remove the unverified/ questionable data to show only the last known/documented spelling, a more general location, and no proven cousin relationship?

Hi Rachel,
I looked at Jovo's profile, as far as I could see, everything looks fine.

Thank you Jadra. I appreciate your help! I'll make updates later if better data becomes available.
