Phillip. We are well aware how politics shaped, and still is shaping, history. There are many books and websites dedicated to the subject. Personally I have many books on my book shelves on the history that shaped the Cape and South Africa. However, this site is dedicated to the genetic connection of people, no matter the historical background that shaped the events that created those connections. It therefore serves no purpose to repeat historical background events on this site. Please stay within the framework of the purpose of this site. Thank you.

So therefore all of these and similar according to Marthinus Petrus van Vuuren should not be on Geni ? How absurd ?

WHAT ???

Our Slave ancestors at the CAPE , Slavery , Frontier wars , Anglo-Boer War , Racial segregation , denial of someones's language and religion . Oppresion by colonial powers , Apartheid , all part of our History so what is alllowed ?

Maybe those who really contribute to GENI are a bit more aware of the significance of HISTORY relating to geneaology .

Politics = Opinion.
DNA = Fact

Geni is NOT an opinion platform so keep politics off, especially far left wokery!

Removing history from genealogy is just bizarre. How is it possible to separate the two? What is the point of finding out who you're related to if there is no history to it? Why would you not want to know what they did for a living, where they stayed, how the war or famine affected them, why they died in an obscure place in the world (war), or that they were the President of the United States. We can't change what they did in the past, but without the history of how and why we got here, it's pointless. I've learnt things about my family that have made me wince but without knowing them there would always be gaps in understanding. Essentially it takes away the sense of belonging.

#Tip from a genealogy site: Connect with Genealogical and Historical Societies.....

From another: "There is so much more to genealogy than just putting together a list of names, places, and dates.

Genealogy is all about understanding the history of your family.

It’s about where your ancestors came from, how their world affected who they were, how they lived, and eventually, how they came to have children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all the way to down to you."

How absurd.

History = Fact (whether you like it or not and how it shaped (DNA) generations to come)
You personal thoughts about the historical event = Opinion

My advice for anyone with this mindset would be to build their own standalone tree and make the whole thing private so it can't be merged with existing profiles however, this would defeat the purpose of a site like this where collaboration is an objective.

From another genealogy site:

"4. Don’t forget the bigger historical picture
Your life is a reflection of the world around you, and the same is true for your ancestors.

When it comes to genealogy, you cannot ignore the world that your ancestors lived in, either.

When your ancestors came to the United States, what was happening in the country where they lived before?

Was there a war, civil unrest, famine, religious persecution?

Why did your ancestors settle where they did?

Why did they move when they did?

All of these questions not only impact how and where you go about searching, but they also add historical context and interest to your family’s history.

For example:

many families relocated in the 1930s as a result of the Great Depression, looking for new opportunities
the U.S. government has issued land grants several times to encourage settlement of the “wild frontier”
the Irish Potato Famine in 1845-1852 caused thousands of people to emigrate
I even have one ancestor who settled where he did because he hurt his leg and couldn’t walk any further.

Understanding the world in which your ancestors lived is vital to understanding who they were, and making their lives truly come to life."

Jenny Calder ( Buys ) -- I bow to you.

Our ancestors were good and bad and often just part of a bigger picture , culmination of events that swept them through time and space they often had very little control of .

Our own Ancestors story becomes an Epic better than any TV Show .

I must say that I found a lot of historical information through searching for information on my family and the other way round as well. It often is the historical records that stores so much info on people's lives and deaths.

Adri -I find it so exciting to discover where my
ancestors were part of history

Also reserchimg ancestors here on GENI I have learned so much about the wider world.
