I’im just wondering why people are including the middle name Backshell for this person as I don’t see it in any records for him or his descendants. I am however a DNA match for one of his descendants and it would make most sense if his mother’s maiden name was Backshell and her father was John Backshell the miller in Battle Sussex. He is my 4th GG. In the Backshell family the daughters tended to include their family name in the second names of their children.

Any more information would be great!

The only reference I can find regarding Backshell is https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=506095.0

Hi Leanne, thanks for the quick response, yes, fathers name William Wheeler and potentially mothers name Mary Backshell… that’s the link I am hoping to make, to Mary’s father John Backshell. The Roots Chat thread you link to is interesting, why does RipleyAnn start out thinking the middle name of her ancestor is Backshell? Where does that come from, she doesn’t have his birth information it seems.
