Amelia, as I knew her, died when I was 2 years of age but I still have a memory of her as a sweet old lady with a pleasant face.

Amelia was my great grandmother on my mother's side.

I was not able to find any evidence of her before her marriage to Daniel Mayne (his parents James Meehan 1797-1842 & Mary Noone 1799-1868) in 1879.

Note the inability to spell the surname. Meehan sounded like Mayne when spoken with a thick Irish accent. Among their children were Ruby (no second name) & Colonel Reincke Mayne. Note the spelling of Reincke.

I found a family who arrived in Melbourne from Germany on board the La Rochelle on 27 January 1857. The parents were Peter Carl Friederich Reincke & Catherine Maria Henriette Reincke (Bussan) with four children, all girls & one of the children was Emilie age 3 probably born in 1853.

I suspected that Emilie in German was pronounce similarly to Amelia. When her father died in 1902 among the surviving children was "Amelia" age 48.

This confirmed that Emilie Reincke was indeed Amelia Mayne (Reincke). The spelling on her marriage certificate was incorrect. There are both references to Amelia Renecke & Amelia Rinicke, neither of which were correct.
