There has been some question as to Grandfather Jesse D Jones’s parents. Recently I was reminded by Mike Scott, a cousin, of some previous information that I had overlooked and it appears to have the best probabilities yet.
The information is contained in a book by Robert Atkin Jordan, MD from Tulsa Oklahoma titled “The Family of Thomas Jones Who Died 1748, Lunenburg County Virginia.”
Below is my estimation of the Jones family tree from Capt. Richard Jones to Jesse D Jones. Before I go further; there may be doubts; however, I feel that the possibilities overshadow the uncertainties.
• Capt. Richard Jones/Rachel Ragsdale
According to the author there is sufficient circumstantial information that Thomas’ parents may have been Capt. Richard Jones and Racheal Ragsdale.
• Thomas Jones /Amelia (Amey)Parham
Richard’s son Thomas Jones was a Colonial Virginia Planter married to Amey Parham and lived in Lunenburg Country, VA...
• Godfrey Richard Jones/Margaret Jones
Thomas’ son Godfrey Jones married Martha Jones from Northumberland Co. VA. He was named as co-executor of Thomas’ will along with Amey. Godfrey died in Charlotte Co. VA in 1818.
• David Hamilton Jones Sr. /Elizabeth Johnson
Godfrey’s son, David Jones Sr., was appointed executor of his father’s will. David and Elizabeth Johnson were married Dec. 1795 and lived in Charlotte Co. VA. It is assumed that he moved to Tennessee in early 1826
The following pertains directly to the likelihood that Samuel Jones was a son of David Jones Sr. of VA and the parents of Jesse D Jones.
In chapter 10, the author states “Samuel Jones may have been the oldest son of David Jones Sr.” This is supported by Samuel witnessing a sale by his father in Charlotte Co.VA in 1819… this puts Samuel’s birth at 1797-1800…(Charlotte Co. VA DB 15 pg. 208)
Also…
There was a recorded land sale in Rutherford Co.TN sold by David Sr. to Samuel, Henry, and Albert…his sons
(Rutherford Co. TN DB R pg. 325)
In Jan. 1825 Samuel sold property in Charlotte Co.VA for $260. (Charlotte Co. VA DB 16 pg. 115)
The Winston family and Jones family were neighbors.
There is a marriage certificate for Samuel Jones to Lucy Winston January 1824….(Marriages of Wilson Co. TN 1802-1850)
• Samuel Jones/Lucy Winston…best probability to be Jesse’s parents
Jesse D Jones was born in Oct 1828 and died in March 1906.
I believe Jesse was named for Jesse Johnson who was Samuel’s mother’s father and David H Jones his father’s father
I know there are “maybe, could be, looks like etc.” however I feel that this gives us the most realistic possibilities to date.
FYI,,.
Jesse D was my GGGrandfather
His son Thomas Jefferson was my GGrandfather
His Son William Wesley was my Grand Father
His son Robert E Lee was my father

NEW RELATIVE…A short while back I received an email from Ancestry stating I have a cousin. I was not real anxious to see it but I took a look anyway- VERY GLAD I DID! I feel this is the relative I have been looking for to verify the JONES TREE. The cousin is Cecil Elroy Jones who is a direct decedent to David H Jones Jr. This verifies that Jesse D. was related to David H. Sr. and on to Capt. Richard.

As I mentioned earlier there has been some question as to the parents of Grandfather Jesse D Jones. Information from the aforementioned book “The Family of Thomas Jones Who Died 1748, Lunenburg County Virginia.” Does have reference to a Samuel Jones possibly being a son of David Hamilton Jones Sr.
I feel even more confident of my JONES Tree going back to Capt. Richard Jones. The lack of verifiable information from the early years will still leave room for doubt.
I WELCOME ANYONE TO PROVE ME WRONG AND/OR PRODUCE SOLID EVIDENCE AS TO JESSE’S PARENTS. I would be willing to share any evidence that I have related to how I came to my conclusions.
