Trinity Churchyard:
Born c.1735, Ann Smith, the daughter of William and Geuttryd Smith, died at age 18 in August 1753.
Her gravestone features a shallowly incised, primitive-looking soul effigy of a type seen more often in New England than in mid-1700's New York City. It is inscribed with an epitaph which reflects her parents' reliance on faith to reconcile themselves to her loss, and represents a departure from the earlier colonial attitude of stoic acceptance:
"Such Early worth
I must I will deplore the meek the
Lovey Anna is no more peacibly
Herein Innocence doth rest
Her mortal Body but her soul
How blest with God Above in
Endless Tryumph She securely
Sits from every Evil free
