I knew John Oscar Underwood and family and the information below is most probably correct vs. what I previously posted. It is consistent with general information I recall hearing. This was posted by another member and I don't have access to their files.

Another Geni member shows Joel Underwood and Sarah A. Underwood as the parents of Joshua (Josh) Underwood born in 1859. Based on the information below it appears that the son of this couple (also a Joshua Underwood) was born in 1856 and that they are not the Parents of Josh Underwood of Tishomingo County, MS.

The individual below is yet another Joshua Underwood, George Joshua Underwood, who was born in 1859 a couple of months after James Joshua Underwood (Tishomingo Co., who married Savannah Bottoms). It may turn out that these Joshua Underwood(s) had common ancestry at some prior point in time.

Thank you, Alex for the Death Record. Franklin County, AL Find A Grave shows the same information: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/5008065/james-joshua-underwood

I grew up near the John Oscar Underwood family and was often at their house. I knew most all of their children or met them at some point. The older ones were grown and gone by the time I was there but visited their parents. Harold Lee Underwood and Margaret Underwood aren't listed on the death certificate.or I may have overlooked them. There were 10 kids total.

Kenneth and Karl were older than I was but I was around both a lot. Karl was a boyhood hero of mine. Ada Ruth's sons, Boots and Rick, were about my age and we played together often,

After finishing college I met and married my wife Anna whose grandmother was Olivia Dawn Underwood Wood, John Oscar Underwood's sister. It's amazing I hadn't met Anna before then knowing the Underwood family as as I did.

Josh Underwood's ancestry has been a mystery to us and that's who I am trying to trace. I suspect the records are there but the family didn't seem to know much before he married Savannah.

I had linked the information on George Joshua Underwood to attempt to show he wasn't the James Joshua Underwood who married Savannah Bottoms and sired John Oscar, et al. George Joshua Underwood was born within a couple of months of James Joshua Underwood in 1859 and both lived in the same general area.

I'm not a premium member and really appreciate you reaching out.

Thank you, again.

Jim

Definitely get yourself a FamilySearch membership (if you don't already have one) they are free :)

I'll see what I can dig up for James Joshua Underwood's ancestry, there is an 1860 US Census which could be him in Scotts Beat, Perry, Alabama showing his mother as Martha E Underwood and perhaps father is John

Thanks, Alex. I do have a FamilySearch membership and need to be more diligent in using it.

I've looked at the Perry Co., Alabama Underwood family but haven't been able to find a link to them thus far.

Here's a link to Underwood interments for Perry Co.

In 1860 I believe our Joshua Underwood born April 7, 1859 will probably be found in northwest Alabama probably in Franklin County. Franklin County, AL, and Tishomingo County, MS, are the most likely places.

This entry shows Joshua's father as Edmund J. Underwood:

What's Next?

There is an Edmund J. Underwood listed in Perry County, Alabama but he died in 1858 and no spouse is shown. Joshua is not listed as a son but that information is often incomplete.

I wonder if J in Edmund J stands for John, as per the 1860 census.

I don't know, Alex. I can form several possible scenarios for this line but can't prove any thus far.
