Recent DNAQ results suggest that Lydia (surname unknown) was of North African descent. She converted to Judaism at 17 in 2 weeks after finding she was pregnant. She was a lady's maid, and her husband Aaron Hyams was the son of the house. He was 18. They had a number of children. She took the name Lea (there was no H) on her marriage.
The tradition is that she was Irish. It may be she came from Ireland, but he probable descent opnes the fascinating possibility that she or her parents may originally have been slaves.
