We're showing Robert Middleton, of Westmoreland County as being born in Virginia and also being the son of parents -- John Middleton and Elinor Middleton -- who never left Wales.

It would appear that we either have Robert's birthplace wrong or we have something about his parents wrong. Anyone know?

I did see that, but I think it muddies the waters a little more.

Our profile for Robert says he was b. 1626 Virginia - d. 1697 Virginia to Welsh parents. The Betty Meischen Genealogy.com tree we're citing says Robert's father was Scottish and that Robert was b. 1650. Meischen also says on Elinor's profile that Robert was actually b. 1662 in/of New Jersey. So I think that whole tree isn't reliable and we should probably not be citing it. (In her citations, she's largely relying on Ancestry trees.)

For Meischen's self-published book, we have the same issues again, of course. The book also constantly self-cites, and even finds a way to cite The Hiram Key: Pharaohs, Freemasons and the Discovery of the Secret Scrolls of Jesus. !!! (I do admittedly respect the citations attributing "Unknown source," however.)

Can any managers weigh in on whether you've found better sources, outside of Meischen? If not, I'll do some digging later today.

WikiTree goes with "parents unknown," which might be our solution here.

I was surprised. This does not prove his children however. Which “grandchild” is of interest?

Notes for John Middleton:

I could go on with other Ellis references, but probably the most significant is John Middleton, born 7-23-1609 son of Robert Middleton, one of the original adventurers in the Virginia Company of London. This John was believed to have married Elinor Ellis according to Beth Engel (see pg 206 & 207 - also pgs 28 & 30) One account of a claim "headright" is in 1639, 200 ac claimed by William Denham @ 50 ac per (4) head. Another account of a "headright" is in 1652, 800 ac claimed by Capt. Thomas Hackett @ 50 ac per 16 heads. Both accounts were for John Middleton and Elinor Ellis. Its hard to say why there were 2 claims - but it is interesting to note that Thomas (Capt.) Hackett was also in Barbados (BBE pg 101)

Here’s a New Jersey Middleton as mentioned in the FTM

Thomas Middleton

Robert Middleton's birth location is not identified.

Erica, that North Neck Middletons page seems like an especially strong find. Thank you!

It looks like this is the referenced Beth Engels book: https://archive.org/details/middletonfamilyi00enge

I'm running errands today (amongst the holiday shopping madness...pray for me), but I definitely plan to dig in later today.

Which “grandchild” is of interest?

Fortunately for us, none. :) The WFTQ brought me to the area and noticed the discrepancy. But if I can find a good comprehensive source, I'll do my usual and try to cite downward as far as I can.

Biography

Margaret Middleton & Robert Myddelton, of London

7. Robert Middleton, “merchant and skynner' of London. M.P. for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis 1604–11 and for London in 1614. According to Mr. Alexander Brown, of Virginia, in his recently published Genesis of the United States, Robert Middleton was one of the original adventurers in the Virginia Company, to which he contributed £37 10s., and also in the East India and North West Passage Companies. “Maurice Abbot and himself represented the English East India Company in their negotiations with the Dutch East India Company in 1614-15.”

He married (1) Margaret, daughter of John Mansell of co. Dorset, and (2) Ann, eldest daughter of Sir Richard Saltonstall, Knight (Lord Mayor of London in 1597), and widow of John Areby or Harry.

14 children

He died in 1616, leaving issue

  • 1-5. Hugh, Thomas, Simon. William, Henry (all died young)
  • 6. Thomas Middleton, under age in 1612.
  • 7. Robert Middleton, admitted to Gray's Inn 24 Oct., 1620. Living in 1626. “English records and family tradition indicate that Robert and his brothers Richard and John left England around 1630 to settle in the West Indies and in Virginia.”
  • 8. Richard Middleton, living in 1623, being then about twenty years of age
  • 9. Peter Middleton, d 1661. Married Mary, widow of Fulke Parry.
  • 10. John Middleton, bp 23 July 1609. Transported by William Denham to the Isle of Wight County, patent dated March 18, 1639. it is believed that John Middleton married Elinor Ellis in Virginia.
  • 11. Margaret Middleton, m 1620 to Thomas Symonds.
  • 12. Joan Middleton, bp 10 July 1608, m 1626 to Joseph Keble.

So John Middleton did leave Wales and (probably) married Elinor Middleton and they did have children Thomas & Robert - but this Robert Middleton married Martha Middleton and her sister Mary Middleton Married Thomas Middleton I’ll try to do in more on this family.

The real question then becomes, is Robert Middleton the same person, or father of Robert Middleton, of Westmoreland County ?
