@ James Lyle, Jr. James Alexander Lyle, and my ancestor, James Lyle, Jr. of Manchester and Whitby, 1777-30 July 1806 are NOT the same person!! I inherited the 1811-1812 letterbook of his father, James Lyle Sr., of Glasgow and Manchester (he later owned Whitby-on-the-James, the seat of the Goode family). I researched this letterbook for publication, and consequently know a great deal about the Lyle family. Someone has conflated these two people of similar name. My ancestor, James Lyle, Jr. had no middle name. James Jr. married Sarah Bland Goode at the insistence of his father, and of the 6 children of the young couple, only 3 lived past infancy - James III, Mary, and John. One child named Martha did not survive, marry, or have heirs!! I own the portrait of James Lyle, Jr., which I posted. It is a copy of a miniature by Sully, owned by my late , great-aunt, Helen Bland French Batte Carmine, and passed down to her daughter and granddaughter.
James Lyle, Jr. was the illegitimate son of a prominent Scottish merchant of Manchester, VA, James Lyle. (1725-1812) by a young woman named Mildred (Milly) Todd. Miss Todd's mother, Elizabeth Todd, was the widow of Richard Todd, and she came to Manchester to manage a tavern acquired with the elder Lyle's financial support. Mrs. Todd died in 1777, leaving three children, all minors, of which Milly was the only daughter. Soon after giving birth to Lyle's son, Milly moved to Kentucky as the wife of Colonel Thomas Tunstall, where she had a number of further children. I doubt if James Lyle, Jr., ever met his half brothers and sisters, although James Lyle, Sr. kept up a correspondence with Milly's brother, Judge Thomas Todd, who became a justice on the US Supreme Court, along with John Marshall, etc..
James Lyle, Jr. was raised in his natural father's comfortable house in Manchester, with all the advantages of his wealth. (Some of the most prominent Virginians, including President Thomas Jefferson and Gov. William H. Cabell were financially obligated to Lyle.)
When the lad was only sixteen years of age, his involvement with Miss Sally Bland Goode, also sixteen, resulted in a pregnancy. His domineering father intervened quickly to force a marriage, giving Mrs. Sarah Bland Goode an order: Madam, your daughter WILL marry my son! The young couple gave the old gentleman three grandchildren who grew up at Whitby: James Lyle III (1798-1851) Mary Goode Lyle Clarke, and John Todd Lyle. A first child, Sally, born 6 months after her parents marriage, died of smallpox the following Spring.
On 30 July 1806, at the age of twenty-seven, James Lyle, Jr. died of an ailment listed as "gout of the stomach". Six months later, his young widow married Tarleton Saunders, another partner in Lyle's business, and continued to live at Whitby until her death in 1816.
I, Lucinda Batte Russell, inherited James Lyle's original letterbook for the years 1810-1812, and the information given above is verified therein. I subsequently sold the letterbook to the State Library of Virginia, after researching it for several years
I am extremely anxious to get this matter sorted out, and the information about James Alexander Lyle removed from my geni records. It has caused me considerable concern.

I still don't understand your comments.
This is a profile you added and a portrait you added.
Martha Monroe Jarret is the only person you did not add and came in with a merge so she is the problem. Not any other profile attached.
Geni is a public collaborative tree.
It may be difficult to understand but it is always helpful to be polite ad ask for help especially when you are the one who is the direct descendant.
Thank you.
Private User is the manager of Martha's profile. Maybe he can weigh in.
Removed From HER About because it doesn't belong there:
NO SUCH PERSON IN THIS FAMILY!!!!
James Lyle Jr, and his wife Sarah Bland Goode had a daughter, Martha, who was born 1806, and died an infant. She did not marry or have children. This Martha is someone else.
Sarah (Sally) the daughter of James Lyle Jr. died at the age of 6 months. She did not marry or have children.
James Lyle, Jr. and Sarah Bland Goode Lyle had 3 children who survived infancy - James Lyle III, Mary, and John Todd Lyle. No more. I have ample documentation.
Please, whoever butt in and placed this incorrect information please remove it, and also remove the portrait of James Lyle, Jr., which I own. I know you meant well, but it offends me greatly.
Lucinda Batte Russell.
I sure hope so. Thank you so much. I owned "my" James Lyle, Sr handwritten letter book for approximately 50 years before finally selling it to the Virginia State Library sometime in the 1990's. He wrote some of the letters in his own hand, especially those of a personal nature, and the rest were transcribed by his secretary, Robert Graham. In it, he goes into considerable detail about his grandchildren, who lived with him, along with their mother, his daughter-in-law, Sarah (Sally) Bland Goode Lyle. It leaves no doubt as to the relationships. These facts are verified in the S. Bassett French papers, and also in the monumental work of my father, the R. Bolling Batte papers. Both of these collections are also owned by the VSL.
Whilst researching the letter book, I became aware that there was a separate and unrelated Lyle family living in Augusta County at the same time. Their patriarch was also a James. It would have been easy to confuse them.
Interesting that the Augusta James was an American Patriot. James Lyle of Glasgow and Manchester was a definitely a loyalist at heart, as shown by his letters to his colleagues in Scotland. At one point, he was ordered to appear in the Virginia Capitol building in Richmond and swear allegiance to Virginia. He came as required and began to take the oath. "On your knees, Mr. Lyle. On your knees," shouted Patrick Henry. Lyle dropped to his knees and repeated his allegiance. Afterwards, he was seen dusting off his breeches, and muttering, "...and a damned dirty hoose it is, too!" But he also donated 2 iron pots to the revolutionary cause. The professional genealogist I worked for shortly after graduation from William & Mary told me that qualified his descendants to join the DAR! Lyle was nothing if not expedient.
Again, thank you for your help in sorting this matter. I feel so much better now.
Kind regards,
Lucinda Batte Russell
Lucinda Campbell Russell you have to have a Pro account in order to be able to disconnect relationships but you can ask for help.
I always (at least I think I do!) try to make the Big Tree better if I can but we ALL make mistakes so the answer is to ask for help.
It isn't always easy to figure out who or how to ask but a Discussion on the profile is helpful
and then there is a Curator Help Discussion: https://www.geni.com/discussions/245980
