Hello! Can we have the sources for this profile, please?
The only source I'm seeing in the "About" is a link to an Ancestry tree that is no longer available.
There's some info at WikiTree, but with a warning flag that there are no sources available there. The attribution on that profile is "Unsourced family tree handed down to Gloria Woodard," so unfortunately, that isn't too helpful.
There's only one Ancestry tree that I'm finding -- unusual for a preacher from this period -- and that profile also has no source beyond another uncited Ancestry profile.
The photo attached to this profile appears to be a screenshot of a USGenWeb page about Isaac HIckman. That doesn't appear to be a match to this profile -- there's no Charles or Reason Hickman listed on that page.
However, good news! The data field for this profile's birth says "Records have him preaching in NC," so at minimum we should be able to find those records. Maybe one of them mentions his parentage, birth place, or other pertinent details. Can someone please share them?
I should add:
I've been trying variations on the name -- "Charles H. Hickman," "Reason Hickman," "Rev. C. H. Hickman," etc. -- and coming up short in published genealogies, newspapers, and other archival materials. I have, however, been able to find two references two a "Rev. C. H. Hickman" -- one in Nebraska (1885, so preaching periods could've overlapped), one in Missouri (1861, so could again have overlapped). So that's something we need to look out for, since we don't want to confuse any reverends. :)
Ugh, I had typed up a comment and then Geni died and I lost it. Trying again!
Private, I see you added this to the "About":
Horry Co Methodist and Marion Co, MS Baptist Association land and Southern Baptist HIstorical Publication in the late 1980's highlighting those with Choctaw Bill who sold their Old Cheraw's Distr granted lands to Moses Floyd, in records with Rev Isom Pounds, first circuit preacher to Florida Parishes as published by the SBC.
Decendants are Listed on Cooper Roll in Bok Chito Clan with Isom aka Rev Isom Pounds and Lucy Fil Montvbby.
This is a great start, and I appreciate it. Where can we see these church records? Are they with the UMC's General Commission on Archives and History and the SBC's Historical Library & Archives?
This is what I find when searching for "Bok Chitto Clan" and "Cooper Roll." Which part is relevant to this profile? I see an "L. M. Hickman" listed, but that's it.
As much as I'm enjoying these conversations with myself, it would be great to have people participate directly here in the thread.
The "About" now says (emphasis mine):
Horry Co Methodist and Marion Co, MS Baptist Association land and Southern Baptist HIstorical Publication in the late 1980's highlighting those with Choctaw Bill who sold their Old Cheraw's Distr granted lands to Moses Floyd, in records with Rev Isom Pounds, first circuit preacher to Florida Parishes as published by the SBC.
Decendants are Listed on Cooper Roll in Bok Chito Clan with Isom aka Rev Isom Pounds and Lucy Fil Montvbby.
Listed with William Hickman as "child" because of the listing of the Cooper Roll neighbors attribution as such. Not listed by DAR as a bio child of William Hickman. Children of William Hickman and Mary McPherson are: Jane Hickman, d. date unknown. Sarah Hickman, d. date unknown. Mary W Hickman, b. 02 Aug 1768, d. 12 Sep 1817. +Paris Hickman, b. 1774, d. 21 May 1838. Ann Hickman, b. Bef. 1790, d. date unknown. Elizabeth Hickman, d. date unknown. Joshua Hickman, b. Bet. 1780 - 1790, d. Bet. 1838 - 1839. Lettice Hickman, d. date unknown. Marcy Hickman, b. Bet. 1780 - 1790, d. date unknown.Children of William Hickman and Lettice Cole are: Lettice Hickman, d. date unknown. Anne Hickman, b. Bet.1780 - 1790, d. date unknown. Marcy Hickman, b. Bet. 1780 - 1790, d. date unknown. Joshua Hickman, b. Bet. 1780 - 1790, d. Bet. 1838 - 1839.
So it looks like we're now saying the listing of Charles/Reason as a son of William Hickman is not supported by the DAR, and that the only evidence is coming from a Cooper Roll from an unstated year.
DAR misses children all the time, so that doesn't influence me one way or the other. But I still can't find any Hickman in the Cooper Rolls other than an "L. M. Hickman" in 1855, which is too ambiguous to be useful to us. There is a "Charles" listed after this L. M. Hickman, but no surname is given and the index doesn't tell us the relationship, if any, or other identifying details. Where can we see the full document? I can only find indices.
For Choctaw rolls in general, NARA gives us a small number of Hickmans, with no identifying information beyond names, on p. 37 of the 1907 rolls -- so way too late for us. The same is true for the searchable index from the Oklahoma Historical Society.
So our pressing question is: Where is the referenced "Cooper Roll neighbors attribution" listing Charles/Reason as a Hickman and as a son of William?
Please link to it in this discussion, not the "About." Thank you!

Private User, I am working on this some. Private asked me to look into his profile. Still searching. But I will figure it out one day.
Sometimes I have to start with what I know - a dear sweet lady Jessie Belle Blanton whose parents were Samuel Porter Hickman and Mary Frances "Fannie" Hickman I grew up knowing "Cousin Belle" and did not realize that we were related by blood this week when working on her tree to find her Hickman roots. She descends from known Native lines as I do Harrelson and Reeves. This has lead me through a lot of the Craven County lines including present day Georgetown, Williamsburg, and over to Sumter. Then I get into Brunswick County, NC a contiguous county to Horry County, SC. So much of this is about geography and seeing what is out there.
I'm using the SC Archives as much as possible. Census and other records on Family Search. Will keep working on this interesting family.
Thanks so much, Susanne Floyd - on and off the grid! I know you try to stick to original records and I appreciate that so much about your work.
Since David is the person who cited the Cooper Rolls and undetermined church records, hopefully can share his records or notes. That would simplify things and save us time. Otherwise, it's a bit of a goosechase.
1/4 of my ancestry is your neck of the woods. I know all about the joys of struggling with records in counties like Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, etc. in North Carolina, and mostly Horry and Marion counties in South Carolina. Same with the 1/4 of my tree that's all rural Alabama and Georgia -- it's all a fascinating slog, but a slog nonetheless. But that makes it all the better when you have a breakthrough!
Well, my typing disappered? WILLIAM HICKMAN is a question in my direct ancestors. He is also difficult for me, I also prefer document sources but have limited abilities-should have the DNA 'tho! Please advise how I might help, Reason may be far away from my line. Thomas Jefferson Hickman
All I have found so far are two census records and neither seem to be a match
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZYC-CDV
"United States Census, 1850," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M882-T5Y : 23 December 2020), Charles Hickman, Accomack Parish, Accomack, Virginia, United States; citing family , NARA microfilm publication (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).
Not Charles Hickman of Barnwell, SC, son of John Hickman as DAR records note that he married Farraby Tyler.
I am stumped so far. I've checked the SC and NC archives and cannot find anything on Charles "Reason" Hickman - only the Charles of Barnwell. Maybe Mississippi???? if that is where he died.
