As a proud Brit, with ancestors from all 4 countries, I'm appealing for more historical accuracy in the use of the Union Jack, and English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh flags on profile pictures.. To go further, I don't like the use of flags in profile pictures at all. By all means add flags a media, and keep profiles for picture, coats of arms etc.
The use of the modern Union jack on profile pictures pre 1801, for example. The present design of the Union Flag dates from a Royal proclamation following the Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. Previously the Uinion jack was an amalgamation of the Scottish and English flags, proclaimed by Janes I of England (VI of Scotland) in 1606.
I remember seeing a similar argument in an earlier post about references to the UK as a counttry in profiles pre 1801, rather than England, and Wales, Scotland and Ireland as seperate countries.
Although the 1706 Treaty of Union and ratified by the Acts of Union 1707, united the kingdoms of England (which included Wales) and Scotland, the United Kingdom was not officially formed until 1801, when Ireland joined.
