Some trees have her as Tabitha Boulware, which I've seen in the past as a variant of Bowler, having researched my son's paternal Boleware line.

But wouldn't this William be WIlliam IV if his father was William III?

William V has brother William Hunt, IV, (died young); that’s must be how the numbering was done by family genealogists, I’ve seen similar schemes.

“ Tabitha, wife of William Hunt (III), parents unknown. Did not marry Thomas Boulware - that's a different Tabitha.”

The notes are:

I think there’s something to this, but it also eluded me to fall into place. This lady - Tabitha Bowler - different generation & marriage.

But definitely take more looks, these ladies didn’t have known birthdates, and married multiple times.

In the profile for Tabitha Hunt is the analysis that convinced me we don’t know this Tabitha’s origins. I’ll just extract the conclusion for you - it’s a complicated tale of (at least) Three Tabithas.

”Young Tabitha married Thomas Bowler/Boulware after April 1671 since she was not married when old Tabitha’s will was probated. Those who list the Tabitha who married William Hunt as an Underwood seem to believe that after Thomas Bowler died (will proved July 1679) she married William Hunt. A bit of simple math makes this highly unlikely. If young Tabitha was of age (21) in 1671 when she was granted probate of old Tabitha’s will. This means she had to be born no later that 1650. By 1694 when a Tabitha ???? married William Hunt young Tabitha would not have been young. She would have been at least age forty four. Not impossible to have a child but unlikely. Also there were other children who appear to have been born after 1894 [typo] …

Yep, a LONG time ago I went through the 'Young Tabitha' thing because the Boulware / Bowler line is direct for my deceased younger son. It was very confusing then. Then tonight I stumbled back into them as possible ancestors of a friend whose tree I've been trying to help with on Ancestry...and found myself revisiting the old confusion. lol

Thanks for that explanation, Erica. I often see out-of-sequence numbering and now I'll consider that might be why. Good insight!

In New England the clerks would use Sr & Jr for 1st & 2nd arrivers of the same name in the town. Maybe they’d be related, maybe not. Plenty of Sr’s were younger than the Jr’s …. Genealogists are ingenious in their Disambiguation schemes, and keep re inventing wheels.

Well, I can definitely see how that system you just described could cause major genealogical problems. Same-name folks can be confusing enough, but making Sr. and Jr. based just on arrival dates is...well, it boggles my mind as to why they'd have done that! lol
