My name is Bruce. While researching a gap in my father's family tree through genetic-testing, I found out that my paternal line's surname is Kirk, and that the male members of this branch also share my paternal haplogroup: R-Z214. This family is located primarily in Pennington Gap, VA, Cabell County, WV, and around Kingsport and Bristol TN.

I've triangulated members of this branch with multiple Kirks in the British Isles, so the possibility of an NPE is extremely remote. Most of the R-Z214 members I've spoken to have significant Iberian ancestry. I believe this haplogroup was introduced into the British Isles by Normans with family origins in Aquitaine, These families seem to married heavily into Northern Spanish populations that are considered Iberian. In fact, two of the other R-Z214's found in the British Isles have Norman surnames. One, in particular, Tissot (whose family is from the same area as my own), is one of those documented "Aquitaine" Normans.
