Does anyone know of any primary sources or documentation that conclusively shows that Peter Gill and Mary Stillwell, daughter of Jacob Stillwell and Nancy Ann Slaughter, were married to one another? I see unanimous attestations that they were married by numerous ancestry sites and in some online books (all from 20th or 21st century), but no one cites a primary source, newspaper article, or credible family memory (e.g., a 19th century source) that proves their relationship with certainty. The censuses only prove that Peter Gill was married to a Mary, but does not stipulate whether or not it was to Mary Stillwell. Jacob Stillwell’s will names Mary Stillwell as one of his heirs, but does not mention that she was a Gill. Peter and Mary were first cousins so it is very likely that they knew one another (and marriages to cousins was much more acceptable in those days), but I am hoping there is an earlier record or credible memory that can confirm their marriage relationship with more certainty. Does anyone know of a 19th century primary source or credible record? Thank you.
