The first name “Jane” is a tag name that seems to have originated by family dubbing her “Jane Doe” and then “Indian Jane” because of the family traditions from different branches who all believed and passed down that she was part or full “Indian”. There is a marriage record in MD for a Robert Copes and a Nelly Burton (1800). Records for Robert Teal Copes (oldest child of our couple) shows he was born in 1799. Our ancestor couple had a daughter Catherine, (my gma ancestor) who married into a Burton family from MD- but this couple (Robert and Nelly m. 1800) shows up in MD when ours were already in Ohio- so maybe just a coincidence on the names but may still be related somehow. We do not have the name of “Jane” verified as of yet.
