James M Kirby's probate records (on ancestry.com) indicate that he enslaved 21 or 22 human beings when he died in 1842. They were:
a woman named Sukey
a boy, Thomas,
a girl, Caroline
who were given to James Kirby.
A girl, Ellen, and
a boy (not named) to William Kirby.
A woman, Jane, and
a boy George, to Elizabeth Kirby (his wife, my ancestor, Elizabeth Latta)
A woman named Rachel,
a girl, Delilah,
boy, Daniel,
to Allen Mann, who was given them only for the rest of his lifetime.
A man named Reubin, senior,
a girl, Cherry, to Elisha Kirby.
A girl named Candace,
a girl, Linder, to Isaiah Kirby.
One n egro man, Reuben, Jr.,
a girl, Eliza, to "the representatives of Hardy Kerby"
A man named Thomas,
a boy, Ben, to "George W. Ellington in right of his wife".
I have found no record of a Joseph Kirby.
Read it and weep for them all.
