I decided to try to trace the ancestry of Frigyes and Marcel Riesz who probably are the best known Hungarian mathematicians of the 20th century. This interest started some time ago when I realized my great uncle Emil Riesz and the younger brother Marcel Riesz both won the Eotvos Competition (in 1895 and 1904 respectively). This maths and physics competition was I believe the first of its kind and was open to all new Hungarian high school graduates each year.

My Riesz ancestors can be traced back to the Rabbi Salamon (Simon) Lob Lipot (Leb “Lobl”) Riesz b 1799 Kitsee Austria (then Kopcseny, Moson,Megye Hungary ) which is not far from Gyor. I decided to investigate if Frigyes and Marcel Riesz were related to my family. I cannot find a connection but found quite a bit about the brothers by researching the Hungarian births, deaths and marriage records available on the JewishGen site.

This is what I found

Emanuel Mano RIESZ b c1809 Bakony d 16-Apr-1886 Gyor m Fani POLITZER b c1814 Gyomoro d 3-Oct-1879 Gyor
son Ignacz RIESZ, b c1844 Takaca (Takácsi ) m 15-Sep-1878 Gyor Sidonia / Szidonia (Piolónia) NAGELb 1857 [parents Beny NAGEL / Rosa
NAGEL]
their children
Frigyes Riesz b 22 Jan 1880 Györ d 28 Feb 1956 Budapest
Dezso Riesz b 30 Dec 1881 Györ d 3 Jan 1882
Mihaly Riesz b Mar 1883 Györ d 6-Mar-1883 Infant
Marcel Riesz b 6-Nov 1886 Györ d 4 Sep1969 Lund Sweden
Sandor Riesz b 29-Feb-1888 Györ (surname written as REIN but I believe this to be a typo in the record or transcription)
Margit Riesz b 3-Dec-1894 Györ

I have a copy of a picture of Ignacz Riesz and his family picturing him, his wife and five children Ignacz was a medical doctor in Gyor. I also have a picture I downloaded of the grave of Ignacz Riesz and his wife in the Jewish cemetery in Gyor.

I would be happy to download these pictures here if someone could show me how.

There is a world of information about the two brothers mathematical accomplishments on the web but very little about their ancestry. Frigyes never married but I understand Marcel did and probably has descendants in Sweden where I believe he ended up before WW II.

While Frigyes and Marcel clearly survived the holocaust I am not sure what happened to their siblings.

Hi:

I am related but only by marriage to:

Regina Riesz
1857–1940

BIRTH 26 DEC 1857 • Pest, Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kis-Kun, Hungary
DEATH 1940 • Budapest, Hungary
mother-in-law of 1st cousin 3x removed

Regina married:

Samuel Gluck
1847–1911

BIRTH 1847 • Miskolc, Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen, Hungary
DEATH 4 OCT 1911 • Budapest, Hungary
father-in-law of 1st cousin 3x removed

and had at least 2 children:

Tibor

and

Szerena

who married

Imre Meir Wahrmann
1868–1956

BIRTH 8 SEP 1868 • Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun, Hungary
DEATH 22 NOV 1956 • District XVI, Budapest, Hungary
1st cousin 3x removed

whom I am related to as my father changed his family name of Wahrmann to Warman when he emigrated post WW2 to Sydney.

I am not sure if this Riesz family is related to those from Gyor.

Around the mid-1850s, it was common for Jews from small towns to move to Budapest and Vienna.

If per chance they are part of the same Riesz family unit, then I have a Public Family Tree on Ancestry DNA under "Warman Family Tree".

Best wishes,

Michael

Hi

Thanks for getting in touch

I am not sure if I am related to Regina Riesz but there is a also a chance we are somehow indirectly related through your Samuel Gluck connection. My grandfather Kornel Riesz married Anna Schwimmer who is related to some Glucks through her mother's family the Picks one of which married a Rosenfeld . These Glucks changed their name to Gábor. Quite complicated.

I can invite you access my Geni family tree if you are interested.

Would like to look at your Warman Family Tree through the Ancestry Public family tree but have no idea how that works.

I gather that prior to about the 1860's the Jews in Hungary were mainly restricted to certain towns where they seem to have been more concentrated. With my relatives I have noted a move to Budapest from about that time.

My father migrated to Australia in 1940 as a young man and his mother who was a widow followed in 1948. Her husband died young in 1926 from Kidney failure.

Edward,

So, were you born in Australia?

If so, Sydney or Melbourne?

I grew up in Rose Bay/Bellevue Hill suburbs of Sydney but left for the USA in 1983.

My father emigrated to Sydney in 1948 at the age of 18 having been born in Budapest but living in Paris from 1946-8.

An uncle, Perl Tibor, emigrated in the 1930s, and the family thought he was crazy at the time, and he was able to sponsor surviving family members as the wait for entry to the USA was long.

If you provide me an email address, I can send you an invite via Ancestry DNA, that provides you a direct link to my work in progress Family Tree, including being able to see all Living Family members which is not the default viewing mode for Ancestry.

I don't have any family members with the surnames you have mentioned, just through marriage:

As with Gluck, the same applies for Rosenfeld, Gabor, Pick but no matches for Schwimmer.

I would be interested in looking at your Family Tree on Geni.

Best wishes,
