@John Russell Brink was not married to my paternal grandmother, Christina Selvage. I guess Geni.com automatically assumes the parents are married. Geni needs to modify this, unless there is way to designate him as just the father of my father.

Geni doesn't do this. You will need to update the relationship status. Partner is the status you are looking for.
