Ann Rhys Harter Schaufele Claims that this John Rees, Jr. (her ancestor) was not the child of John Rees of unknown origins. She shows him as son of John Jones (son of the Welsh Tract settler Rees John William aka Rees Jones who became known as Rees Jones). However, Ann does show her ancestress as Hannah Rees
Advice and additional references greatly appreciated.
Her notes include:
According to family records and research, that John Reese was the grandson of Rees John William Jones and was not the John Reese that came in was born in 1718. That information was incorrectly put in a biographical sketch of Gerard Reese in Biographical Cyclopedia of Representative Men of Maryland and District of Columbia p498-499. This information was incorrect and that was supported by data in family records, records of distant family members , Quaker records , and various books.
John and Hannah were passengers on The Vine and were listed in the US and Canada, Passenger & Immigration Lists Index 1500's-1900's. . name was Rees Jones. with Hannah and 3 children. source bibliography -Glenn, Thomas Allen. Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania. p233
Rees John William Jones was buried at Marion Friends Burial Grounds and the record is from Find A Grave.
Among several Quaker records in Radnor Monthly Meeting Montgomery PA are the births of son John and his twin Catherin (who died early on) 1688 and the birth of daughter Sarah in 1690.
He is listed in Colonial Families of the US 1607-1775 as Rees John William Jones.
Other sources cited in the family history are Ancestral Families of the Wards by Anna Daneker Ward (Balto MD 1950) , Very old records held by Sarah Gatchell of Baltimore. I am trying to locate the descendants of these ladies as the papers once held by my grandfather were used by them and according to one of my cousins, were not returned after my grandfather's sudden death in 1954.
There is also the Historical Collection of Gwynedd by H.M. Jenkins and the Patent/Grant by Wm. Penn in the Deed Book 243 in Philadelphia.
John William Rees appears in our history as that or Rees John William Jones - the Welsh used family names a lot differently than we do and it can be quite confusing. I think the children and grandchildren of John decided to use the Reese name, not Jones or William.
I do not have much doubt that my ancestors were John &Hannah and that they did come to their Welsh Tract in 1684.
