Just putting some logical guesses to research some theories of surname alterations. Cause it looks as though several members of this family have altered surnames. Between 1630 and 1670 in the Colony of Virginia there were individuals with surname Saunders/Sanders/Sommers and similar surnames, the most likely connection would be a George Saunders, who was born about 1635 in the Colony of Virginia, who has descendants that could, and very likely did alter their surnames.

The Captain Sumpter i am texting of would be born before 1620, as he is sailing on ships in 1640.
