Hi everyone,
Today we're releasing a change to how wikitext is presented on Geni. As you know, profile biographies ("About"), project descriptions and surname descriptions all allow wikitext markup to support basic formatting, images and named links, etc. If you choose NOT to enter wikitext-specific markup, your text should look the same. There's been one exception to that, however, which we are reversing today: single line breaks.
Before today, if you entered text on two lines with only a single "line feed" (Enter key) between them, like so:
line one
line two
...the site would remove that line feed and display those two lines together:
line one line two
Aside from being unexpected, this violates the principle that if you choose not to enter any wikitext-specific markup, your message should look the same as if wikitext didn't exist. So here's what's new:
To remind you of this, the wikitext formatting toolbar now has this pop-up message every time it loads:
Clicking "formatting help" or the yellow pop-up tip will display the usual formatting box, but with the following information added:
[NEW] We've simplified wikitext line breaks to be more intuitive. Now, you no longer need to use the line break button or the code "
" to split a line. Just hit Enter one time for a single line break.
We hope this will make wikitext editing easier / more intuitive.
kind regards,
Mike at Geni
