Hi Marnie!
I'm not sure at all bout the "story" of George Barnthouse that was told to us as kids growing up. It may have been just one of those family "Urban legends" but I remember being told that he was a barber in Centerville and the story was told to us that he cut the hair of some of the Jesse James gang the day before they robbed the bank in Corydon, Iowa. I've looked some things up and found that he would have only been 21 years old when this robbery took place but that still doesn't prove that it didn't or did happen. I also question that even if it did really happen was it a day or two days before because they were travelling on horseback and it would have taken them sometime to get from Centerville to Corydon. The Corydon bank was robbed by them on June 3, 1871. From what I remember being told is that the barber shop was located off the southwest corner of the Centerville square possibly on Jackson street or maybe 12th street and was located very near to where the horse drawn fire department would have been located back then. I was just wondering if you had run into any information about this? Like I said this could very easily just have been a family urban legend but then again who knows?
This is in regards to profile: George L Barnthouse

Barry Wells
