This is an extremely valid point and one that I find most frustrating when I attempt to put in place names. Could the curators not allow a place for original names of places, and then the new names as they are today? In this way, the proper historical record is maintained, and yet in generations to come our progeny will be au fait with current place namesakes well as their original names!
The example of Tulbagh is a good one, where it was originally Roodezand, and the area was also known as “Het land van Waveren.” The historical implications of these old names are lost to posterity when only up to date names are used! (I have a particular interest in Roodezand as my wife’s father’s family came from there!) I agree wholeheartedly that this is a serious flaw in the current Geni programme, and needs to be addressed very urgently!

In this way the historical record is maintained and yet in generations to come, our progeny will also be au fait with the original names and associated history. This is vitally important! The example of Tulbagh is en excellent one where this beautiful little Western Cape Town was originally known as Roodezand, and the district was also known as “Het land van Waveren!” (I have a particular interest in this area as my wife’s father’s family came from there!).
