Minkoff / Minkovich / Horowitz (HaLevi)

Hi!

I wondering if anyone here with connections to Eyshashook can help me with a family cold case. Rabbi Mordechai Minkovich (https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Drohichyn/dro135.html) was my great grandfather. He spent time at a Yeshiva in Eyshashook. This is his profile: Mordechai Minkovich [הרב מרדכי בן שלום שכנא הלוי מינקאָוויטש (מינקאָוו)]

Here is our cold case: Family "legend" tells that Minkovitch (which became Minfoff in the USA, and seems to have been Minkov at some point in Europe) actually was not the family name. The family name was Horowitz and at some point Horowitz switched papers with someone Minkov/Minkovitch to get themselves or their son out of an Army draft situation. This could have likely been in the mid 1800s, maybe even earlier.

I would love to find more about who did the switch in the hope of being able to track our family back into the Horowitz era. Right now we know the paternal line first names are Michael < Mordechai < Shalom Shachna < Yosef . We have never been able to track back farther than Shalom Shachna ben Yosef who seems to have at least spent time in/near Boten - Slonim.

I would so very much appreciate any help or direction in tracking this down.
