Is your direct line through your mother?
I see Erica Howton did some work on his profile back in April, perhaps she can be of help.

Yes, the Perkins line is through my mother, her father was born a Perkins, but his name changed to Brown in 1910, yes there is a story behind that.

Ronald Wong shows as; Ronald Wong is Thomas Perkins' 13th great grandson.

Can only guess that Howard is also directly related through his mother but since he has not added her profile to Geni the path doesn't connect.

Well the path is not what I expected to see. I didn't know that there were Perkins on my mother's maternal side.

The only Perkins that knew were on on my mothers fraternal side:
You
→ Helen
her father → Morgan "Perkins" Brown
his father → John B. Perkins
his mother → Sarah Amelia "Sally" Perkins
her mother→ Margaret Polly Perkins
her father → Lewis Perkins SR
his father → Joshua Perkins
his mother → Esther 1 Perkins

I doubt that the Perkins on both sides are related, but who knows, I don't.

You
→ Helen M Brown Wong Piccolomini
your mother → Lessie Brown
her mother → Eliza Ann Smith
her father → Albert Woodruff
his father → Pickett Woodruff, Sr.
his mother → Nancy Woodruff
her father → Pickett Marvin
his mother → Sarah Marvin
her father → James Perkins, Sr
his father → Abraham Perkins
his father → Isaac Perkins
his father → ‘Quartermaster’ John Perkins, Jr.
his father → John Perkins, I, of Ipswich
his father → Henry Perkins
his father → Thomas Perkins
his father

Regarding my mother's fraternal line of Perkins, I seriously doubt that they are related in anyway to the Perkins on her maternal side, as they are traced back to England.

My mother's father, Morgan Brown was born Morgan Perkins in Webbville, KY in 1901.
His father, John W. Perkins changed the families name to Brown in 1910, and moved them to Ohio, yes there is a story behind that.

Morgan's line of Perkins is traced back to the Virginia Company which was established in 1609. This line of Perkins was derived from Mulatto's, who ancestors were first introduced into the Virginia Colony in 1619 as, stolen Angolan Negroes bound for slavery in New Spain, now Mexico. And as written about in a letter as the, 20 and odd Negroes the first Africans in Virginia, by John Rolfe of the Virginia Company.

These Perkins ancestors were never slaves, but became indentured servants, as there was no slavery in the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company by decree came under English law. England did not participate in slavery until around 1700.

"The Virginia Slave Code (1705) By 1705, British settlers had lived in Virginia for almost 100 years. In the initial years of settlement, indentured servitude was widespread, African slavery was relatively uncommon, and race relations between blacks and whites were ambiguous, though not entirely equal. This Perkins line was always, Free People Of Color, up to and including through the Civil War.

Revision to above:
Slavery did exist in the Virginia Company, but on a very limited basis.
As stated my Perkins line were never slaves, as they were born to Free People Of Coloor.

I share common ancestors with Lessie Brown. I have to investigate the other side.

Sorry in advance for this long read:

My grandparents were Morgan "Perkins" Brown and Lessie "Smith" Brown, for ease of reading I will only refer to my grandfather as Morgan Perkins and my grandmother as Lessie Smith. As noted elsewhere his father changed the family name to Brown.

As stated, it appears that the Perkins on my grandmother Lessie Smith's side is NOT related to the Perkins family of my grandfather Morgan Perkins.

Through AncestryDNA, I have been in contact with 3 Perkins related to Lessie's family, and all said that they did not have relatives living in or having lived in Kentucky where Morgan was from. So I see no correlation there.

My 4th great grandfather, Lewis Perkins, SR was the only son of Joshua "Old Jock" Perkins to settle in Kentucky. "Old Jock" and his other family members settled in North and South Carolina after leaving Virginia. As the family grew the many generations moved on to Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. With some going even further west and north into the Dakota's.

I have talked to a few Perkins related distant cousins whose DNA test shows African ancestry. Most all have more than one connection to the first Perkins from the Virginia Company in the 1600 and 1700 hundreds, Esther Perkins and in my case her son Joshua "Old Jock" Perkins. A lot of this is due to closely related relatives marrying because of their somewhat closed and close communities. Being Mulatto's / Melungeon's they were shunned by most whites.

Note: There is a lot of misinformation posted about Joshua "Old Jock" Perkins. Let me reiterate, There is NO connection between him and Lessie Smith's family. Morgan Perkins' family originated in the Virginia Company with his mother Esther Perkins and possible father of "Old Jock" unknown Driggers. This is being extensively investigated through Y-700 DNA test. Y-700 is DNA only passed on through father and son. Only a handful have been found and tested. The results cannot be considered conclusive with just a few testers. But so far all leads are looking good.

With this being said, If anyone can conclusively connect my Kentucky Perkins with Lessie's Ohio Perkins I would love to see it.

One more note before I continue: Perkins family lore holds that there were Native Americans within the family. I personally have had two DNA tests by two different companies, NO NA DNA WAS FOUND. Additionally, many distant cousins who still live in the Virginia Company area as well as distant cousins who live throughout the country have had NO NA DNA show in their tests either. It has been pretty much verified that any NA DNA that has shown up in a Perkins DNA test came from a family member outside of the Perkins family.

As the west expanded the Perkins and their associated families had to keep on the move because of prevailing laws of the time. Many associated themselves with Native Americans, Portuguese, Spaniards, and countries from the middle east, because of the way they looked and their complexion. Many were Mulatto's who could and did pass for white. Because having "one drop of black blood" meant that you were black, and blacks could not vote, among other unlawful things of the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule

If anyone who reads this is related to the Perkins in Kentucky and want to know more, there is a lot of good reading on their ancestors.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redbone_(ethnicity) - Many the Perkins and related families moved south into Louisiana before 1803, The Louisiana Purchase. Families continued to move there for many generations afterwards also.

A lot has been written about this subject, which is still being studied today.
I belong to an Facebook group called, Joshua "Old Jock" Perkins Family research. All the members have a connection to the original Perkins from the Virginia Company, Jamestown and Accomack VA.
Many members there have been researching Esther and "Old Jock" and their Unknown Driggers for more than 30 years. They travel as far as they can researching wills, property rights, newspaper articles, city and county court house records.

Look back a few post and you an see my connection to "old Jock" and Esther is through my grandfather Morgan Perkins and NOT through Lessie. In order to be connected with Lessie's Perkins they would need to following back to a son of "Old Jock".
