I have a question - Was John Johnson the Immigrant from the Netherlands? b:1589
My father thought we were Scottish but after his funeral at a family reunion in Wilkes County, NC (Brushy Mtn) family members said we were from the Netherlands. No Proof.
Thanks for anyone who knows and will share any information. God Bless. Jim Johnson

John Johnson was supposedly born about 1590 in Annandale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.[citation needed]

We have been unable to find a reliable source that supports Scottish origins. See attached G2G discussion.

For what it's worth, this says Aberdeen, not Annandale, and says Gooch wife is wrong. This is submitted by me only as a research aid

James Johnson John Johnson the Yeoman Planter was of Scottish descent. John Johnson who was hanged for Bacon's Rebellion was from Holland and these two John Johnson's have gotten confused and mixed over the years. Luckily one can tell they are not the same as we have record of John Johnson the Yeoman existing after John Johnson from Holland was hanged.

Managers of James "The Immigrant" Johnson,

I am contacting you about this profile: https://www.geni.com/people/James-The-Immigrant-Johnson/60000000071...
Who is James “The Immigrant “ Johnson’s birth father and birth mother? Thank you, John
Sincerely
John Arthur Johnson/60000000317070...

I am actively attempting to rectify the much-debated issue around this particular ancestor, my 9th Great Grandfather.
Records indicate that his parents were:
Thomas Johnston of Craig 1598-1656 & Mary D Irvine 1626-1659

They had a son “James Johnston, Litster in Aberdeen”, who was reported to have received little more than the Johnston name. It is clearly noted on his profile that he is “Not the same as James ‘The Immigrant’ Johnson” although I remain unconvinced. https://www.geni.com/people/James-Johnston-litster-in-Aberdeen/6000...

James "The Immigrant" Johnson 1651-1716 may have been christened at 5yrs in 1656. (aka James William Johnston Sr)

Matching the Litster story; he was said to have been the youngest of his clan and possessed no land. This became a driving force for his migration to America. From the accounts that I have uncovered he was only married twice. The source of contention about James Johnson/Johnston is apparently hinged on him having a 3rd wife and little talk of a son by the same name.

He was married to his 1st wife Margaret Alexander 1653-1685 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. They were married from November 23rd, 1672 until her death in 1685. They had 4 boys:
Alexander Johnston 1672-1715
James William Johnston II 1673-1769
William Johnston 1676-1751
John Nicholas Johnson 1677-1751

James Sr. married his 2nd wife Faith Leith c1656-1702 in 1686, also in Aberdeenshire after the death of Margaret. They had a daughter named Elisabeth in 1688. An article mentions Cameron’s “Landing & Sailings” which show William, John & Alexander Johnston, sons of James Johnston of Aberdeenshire having sailed to VA in 1696. Faith and James both passed away in King William County, Virginia.

I believe his son James William Johnston Jr/II (1673-1769) stayed behind in Scotland and married Jeane Ogilvie in 1691. She was christened at Saint Nicholas on the 29th of July 1675 and is shown to be the daughter of Alexander & Marie Ogilvie. The younger James and Jeane had three boys and two girls all christened at Saint Nicholas in Aberdeenshire:
Alexander Johnston - 7 Aug 1692
Mary Johnston - 10 Jun 1694
Jean Johnston - 31 May 1696
William Johnston - 10 Oct 1699
John Johnston - 16 Nov 1701

At least two of these children were born in Scotland after the 1696 supposed "Landing & Sailings" record indicate James Sr., his wife Faith and James Jr's brothers were in America. I have not seen these records yet myself to validate.

I also believe the age difference between James Jr and Jeane makes this a more likely story.

I hope this helps put a little more context around this subject.

William A, II

I was told at a family reunion in Wilks Co. that we were from Netherlands... no proof.

My Father was Claude Johnson, son of Charlie Johnson, twin of Robert Johnson. Sons of Filmore Columbus Johnson. He said we were from Scotland... no proof.

So, my entries for this are just information I was tracking. Nothing sure.

IF John Johnson of Jamestown is our gggg grandfather, AND he made trips back to get family and friends and bring them to America for land grants etc. All that was done by 1620/23 and the family should have been in Jamestown by then. There is a Robert Johnson who came to visit around that time and was thought to be a brother to John...no proof.

James Johnson Doesn't look like your Johnson line is up on Geni at all so impossible to tell where your Johnson line comes from without research.

I was able to within about an hour of researching my friend whose last name is Johnson and he had hardly a clue what his grandfather's name was or relatives. But with the tiny amount he was able to give me, I pulled up multiple obituaries and quickly traced his line back to a tiny island of Sweden.

Who knows if they are "Swedes" though or not.

James Johnson The trick is to use all the relatives information and any tiny clue you have to search around. I was able to really explore my friends side fast by using women who married into the Johnson line as the surname Johnson is very common.

James Johnson
So this is what someone has for your tree as long as what family search has is correct and also this Johnson line is correct.... Yes it does right now go straight back to the Ancient Planter

You just have to verify each connection piece by piece.

James Johnson Already though I can see some birthdates don't match up but the relations are the same.

Familysearch combined with Geni combined iwth wikitree combined with findagrave is very powerful stuff to get clues to locate those primary sources that will lock down your line.
