THE PALATINE ZELLER IMMIGRANTS AND THEIR BARDORF CONNECTION
By Jim Baucom (jim0400@aol.com), husband of Betty Jo Zellers, a descendant of Johannes Zeller (1686-1737) and Anna Catherine Unknown.

This article uses only documented data found by John Vallentine that was published in his book, The Tulpehocken Zellers and Their Descendants, published 2012 and Bardorf data found in Henry Jones book Even More Palatine Families. vol. 3 (2002).

About 3000 German Palatines left London England and 400 died at sea or soon after arriving, June 1710, at NY. The subsistence money given to the immigrants was recorded as NY Gov Hunter Subsistence List. A microfilm of the original Subsistence list was viewed at the LDS Library by John Valentine that shows the following information. June 30 Johann Heinrich Zeller (3,0) and Anna Battorffin (3,0). The first digit is total persons over 10 years old and the second digit under 10 years old. Four days later Johann Heinrich Zeller (1,1) and Anna (5,0). A year passed before Anna’s two new people were identified as Johannes Zeller and his father John George Zeller on the subsistence list. Between Johannes and Anna listing the total was always (5,0). The child under 10 was Anna Maria Zeller who married Johannes Schaeffer about 1717 at NY. She could have been the brother’s sister or Heinrich’s daughter.

The two persons with Anna when she arrived are the link to the rest of this story.
They are Johannes Martin Bardorf and Catherine Elizabetha Bardorf. Original postings state that their parents were Professor Johannes Jacob Peter Batdorf b 1771 and Anna Catherine Zeller of Darmstadt Germany but the Henry Jones team discovered a totally different Bardorf, and wife and location for the family documented by Helmershausen Germany church records of marriage and baptisms of their children.

Kunigunda died 1702 and some time later Peter m Anna Catherine Zeller who supposedly was born Anna Catherine Zeller born Anspach or,born Herber or born Zeller. Both Ms. Anspach and Ms. Herber were born over 300 km from Helmershausen. Widower Peter Bardorf married a local Zeller.

1708 Peter, Anna and 5 children sailed from Amsterdam Holland to London England. Peter died 1709 at London while waiting for transportation to America. Widow Anna Bardorf could have stayed in London or returned to Germany as did some of the other Palatines, but she chose to go to NY without a husband because her brothers and father would be there to help.
Somewhere between Amsterdam and NY three of the five children died. Only widow Anna Batdorf, Johann Martin Batdorf (born Bardorf) m Maria Elizabetha Walborn 9 JAN 1716 NY) and Catherine Elizabetha Batdorf (born Bardorf) m Christian Wilhelm Walborn 11 DEC 1717 NY arrived at NY. Subsistence records show that Johannes and his father Johann George shared living quarters during June JUL 1710 until SEP 1712 with the three Batdorfs.

About 1716 Palatine Ulrich Simmendinger returned to Germany from NY and in 1717 published a list and location of the Palatines still alive in NY. At Neu-Ansberg, NY listed alphabetically were Anna Badtorffinn (widow) and 2 children, Johannes Schaffer and wife Anna Maria born Zeller after 1700, Hanss Heinrich Zoller, wife and 3 children and Johannes Zoller and wife Anna Catherine and 2 children, proving that Johannes Zeller (1686-1737) did not marry widow Bardorf who was his sister. Henry Jones stated Anna Catherine Bardorf (born Zeller) and Anna Maria Schaeffer (born Zeller) were probably sisters of Johannes Zeller (1686-1737).

I believe that the documented evidence shows that the Johann George Zeller family and the Peter Bardorf Family were neighbors at Helmershausen Germany. After Peter’s first wife died in 1702, he married Johann George Zeller’s daughter Anna Catherine In 1708 Peter Bardorf, Anna Catherine and 5 children very likely were travel companions with John George Zeller, sons Johann Heinrich, Johannes and 7/8 year old Anna Maria Zeller. There could have been other Zeller family members who started with this group who died before arriving at NY,

Questions and Comments welcomed.
My wife is Betty Jo Zellers, a descendant of Johannes Zeller (1686-1737). Her brother’s Y DNA is a match to Ryan Zeller a descendant of Johann Heinrich Zeller (1684-1756).
