Kent Family History CDROM for burials in Benenden have a Thomas Austen buried 8 Apr 1777. No age or parents are given.

Hi. Yes it is a puzzle. I've recently spent many days researching and double checking this issue. Edward and Elizabeth Vane seem to be the most likely as their dates and residences all match well with Thomas. The other parents don't have any sources, the dates are very broad and have no residence details. I've added a record in sources, of Thomas being born to Edward and Elizabeth for your information. Any other ideas?

I still have 2 sets of Edward and Elizabeth - currently nothing has determined which set is his parents (or even if there are 2 sets)

Using Elizabeth Vane as another way of checking Thomas' birth there is also a mix up as there are 2 Elizabeth Vane. After researching, Elizabeth daughter of Sir George Vane would be the right one due to the birth dates. If you following the correct Elizabeth marrying Edward son of Robert and Mary Oliver.....they had Thomas who married Mary Buckwell.....

Hi Leanne.

Looks like Edward Austen is also a puzzle to be worked out. I've just posted this the below but wanted to tag you into the discussion to have a look.....

Been checking this out and I think there are 2 different families being mixed up here with their Edward Austen sons:

Family 1: has Sir Robert Austen 1st Baronet b1580 begat: Col Robert Austen b1642 married Judith Freke begat another Col Robert Austen b1670 married Jane Strode begat Sir Edward Austen 6th Baronet b1705.

Family2: Robert Austen b1628 married Anne Siger and begat Robert Austin b1659 married Mary Oliver begat Edward Austin b1686 married Elizabeth Vane, daughter of George Vane and Hester.

Someone went in to the profiles and edited all the information and then merged them together. I think I have managed to revert them.

I think there is definitely 2 Edward AUSTIN's who married Elizabeth VANE's - but it is way outside my area of expertise to work out the finer details of which one married which one.

I am going to ask the other curators to see if someone more experienced in the location and time period can have a look for me.

Hi Leanne. The Austen saga goes down to Thomas Thomas Austen where he has 2 sets of parents. I'm not sure about the other similar line, but certainly 'our' Thomas comes from: Edward son of Robert and Mary Oliver; then to Robert and Elizabeth Vane daughter of George an Hester; then to Thomas. There may be another Thomas in the other line that family was mixed with, but the above is the Australian Thomas' line. When you get time would you mind correcting this as the system is showing incorrect lineage due to this. I'm hoping this corrects the Austen issue!!! Thanks for your help, it's much appreciated. Hi Leanne. Has there been any progress on separating the USA descendants from the Australian descendants in this Austen line? All the reports we get for DNA matches are using the USA line ie Elizabeth Vane daughter of Lionel Austen rather than the Australian line ie Elizabeth Vane daughter of George and Hester. It's been incorrect for a long time now and am hoping it's close to being sorted out. Any news at all? thanks. Kathy
