What does the Greater Coat of arms of Sweden, offical in 1909, do here, with a person who died 1470?
Everyone can see the dynastys Bernadottes COA in the heart shield, its totally irrelevant for a king who lived 500 years before that?

I delete it.

Karl Knutsson combined the coat of arms of Bjälboätten and the three crowns going back to Erik den helige. The heart shield was his own coat of arms. The heart shield depends on which total familj is reigning.

The COA seems to be deleted, very good, because family Bonde never used family Bernadottes COA, for natural reasons.

As an icon for Karl Knutsson this picture https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000... or his seal https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000... could be used.

Notke made the famous sculpture of Karl Knutsson from the Gripsholm collection, (also showing his COA as a king) https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000... . The sculpture is considered to be one of the first portraits in Sweden and is probably made somewhere after 1484. https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000...

The current picture shown is probably made around 1800. And it's less interesting.

It would seem very fair to use https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000...

as it was Karl Knutsson Bonde who actually gave the Swedish Coat of Arms it's design.

" Det var också han, som gav det sv riksvapnet dess slutliga utformning: en kvadrerad sköld med de tre kronorna i första o fjärde, folkungalejonet i andra o tredje fälten. I sin strävan att inte minst historiskt legitimera sitt kungadöme uppställde han ett program, som varken var identiskt med Engelbrekts folkliga eller med det, som eftersträvades av anhängarna till en "konstitutionell" stormannastyrelse...."

A picture of Notkes statue - "en face" published on a russian webbsite.

Please observe that the lion is NOT in a field with blue stripes. Heralically that is very interesting.

On the site they write: "When it comes to treachery, bloodlust and treachery among the Swedish Kings, none of the monarchs can be compared with Charles VIII Knutsson Bund, "

Reidar Holmsen Very interesting. Its not even the Bjälbo lion, which never had an axe in his hands. Looks like the Norwegian lion to me.

* vald till Sveriges konung i Sthlm 20 juni 48,
* hyllad som sådan på Mora sten 28 juni 48,
* krönt i Uppsala domkyrka 29 juni 48,
* hyllad av en valförsaml i Hamar som norsk konung 25 okt 49,
* krönt i Trondheims domkyrka 20 nov 49

It's clearly a heraldic Norwegian lion on Notkes statue. What is shown there is the two kingdoms under one king.

The imperial councils of all three countries met in January 1459 in Skara . There King Christian I was promised by the Norwegian and Danish Imperial Councils that his son John I would succeed the throne. This decision was confirmed by the Swedish Imperial Council at a meeting in Uppsala. This was confirmed again at a formal ceremony in Stockholm.

In Norway, Christian was first seen as a king. But there was strong political support for Karl Knutsson. As I understand the bishop who crowned Karl Knutsson was a strong supporter of Karl.

We can see that in both Sweden and Norway there was opposition against the danish influence. But both countries were divided politically.

erkebiskop Aslak Hartniksson Bolt was the bishop who crowned Karl in Trondheim. https://nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aslak_Bolt

This seal does not use the norwegian lion. https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000...

Neither this https://www.geni.com/photo/view?album_type=photos_of_me&id=6000...

Of course it was impossible to use the norwegian lion when he was not longer king of Norway

Notkes sculpture was made after Karl Knutssons death. The persons who ordered it wanted to show that Karl Knutsson had been king in both Sweden and Norway respectively.

This could have a political meaning on the scene. Strange that Kristian II didn't have the statue destroyed.
