That is James Hicks or John Strange's theory, but little documentation. Neither James nor any of his wives or children is listed in Starr with him as a parent. He was the father of Tiana ,Rogers, confirmed through a claim for property lost to Removal. Her mother is unknown. He was the father of a son John with Lydia/Chowayuka Halfbreed, confirmed by Moravian records. James Hicks thinks he had additional children with Lydia, and that he had an additional wife - no documents to support these claims.

“Johnson was somewhat after the style of William, not quite so tall, probably not quite so intellectual, but far above the average, and something of a model man. He for thirty years was agent of the Cherokee Indians, and spent thirty years in Washington, D. C., where he died.

“Joseph moved west at an early date. He made quite a reputation and was accumulating property rapidly, but died in a few years, and was buried at Old Fort Wayne with honors of war.

“Lovely, the fourth son, when I knew him was just grown up, with a pale face, and was a young man of fine capacity. He now lives in California and is doing well.

“George, one of the younger sons, died in the west, in the Confederate service.

“John moved to the west, and is living in the Choctaw Nation.

Yes, Don Shadburn has an excellent reputation except for his last book “Upon Our Ruins” co-authored with John Strange, who is not always reliable. Strange has a lot of unsupported theories just like Hicks does. There were several men named “John Rogers” it’s impossible to be sure who was who. The list of Rogers children above are children of a John Rogers and Sally Cordery.

"The Coosawattee John Rogers family composition was 4 males under 18; 1 male over 18; 4 females under 16; and 1 female over 16, with one person being white connected by marriage. This information indicates we are probably looking at the family of John Rogers and Tiana Foster.

In 1835, John and Tiana would have had at least three sons under the age of 18 (Hilliard, James and Thomas) and four daughters under the age of 16 (Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Rachel.) With another son's (Lewis) birth year calculated as about 1837, its possible he was born earlier and was listed on the census, or there could have been an unknown son born who died as a young child. Despite this discrepancy, this Coosawattee John Rogers family found on the 1835 Census of the Cherokee Nation appears to be the family of John Rogers and Tiana Foster.

Testimony given by the former Associate Judge of the Cherokee Nation Supreme Court, John T. Adair, on 15 Mar 1888, further supports the theory that Coosawattee John Rogers was the husband of Tiana Foster. Adair gave information on all the Rogers he knew, including Coosawattee John Rogers.

John T. Adair said the John Rogers who married his cousin, a Foster, was a white man and lived on the "Chustawatie" River. "
