For me, a riddle and a conundrum! For which any help would be appreciated.
In the Stewart tribe list, John Stewart of Dalswinton (c1315-c1380) is seen as the grandson of Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl, the son of Sir Walter Stewart of Garlies & Dalswinton and father to Walter Stewart of Garlies & Dalswinton…. this as per the data on this site.
It seems to me also that Katherine Stewart (later married to Herbert Maxwell) was daughter to John Stewart of Dalswinton, sister to Walter Stewart… again as per data on this site.
It is also said on this site that Walter Stewart was father to Marian Stewart.
Thus –
1. Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl
.1. Sir Walter Stewart of Garlies & Dalswinton
.1.1. John Stewart of Dalswinton
.1.1.1. Walter (and Katherine)
.1.1.1.1. Marian Stewart
Five (5) generations.
Then -
It is said on this site and others that Marian married a different John Stewart (c1381-1420)(1st of Dalswinton & Garlies), the son of the famed Scottish hero Sir Walter Stewart of Jedworth (d following the 1402 Battle of Homildon Hill). Per this site, Sir Walter Stewart of Jedworth is the son of Sir Alexander Stewart (d 1404), himself the son of Sir Alexander Stewart (d 1374), himself the son of Sir Alan Stewart of Dreghorn(d 1333), himself the son of Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl.
Thus –
1. Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl
.1. Sir Alan Stewart of Dreghorn
.1.1. Sir Alexander Stewart, 1st of Darnley
.1.1.1. Sir Alexander Stewart, 2nd of Darnley
.1.1.1.1. Sir Walter Stewart of Jedworth
.1.1.1.1.1. John Stewart (c1381-1420)(1st of Dalswinton & Garlies)
Six (6) generations.
Is it possible for 5th generation (from Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl) to be married to a man who is six generation (to Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl)??
That is what is confusing my thoughts!
