James McBride, Sr. - Query on photo of James McBride?

Is this photo actually a photograph of James McBride, Sr. ?

I could be mistaken but I thought that portrait photography didn't start until around 1839 and James lived from 1734 to 1817

What is the source for this being a photograph of James?

Yes it certanly is. It is a chalk drawing that has been in my Family for Generations.
