As of this date, R' DS Grodzinski has 5 living yDNA descendants listed in GENI, the most recent born in 1971. yDNA testing of one or more of these descendants would be a valuable addition to this family tree's knowledge base. If a person reading this is qualified to make the test and is willing to do so, please reply to this discussion.

Can Ancestry.com DNA be used?

Chaim Shulman An Ancestry raw file can be used to identify accurately the broad haplogroup (at no cost), which is a very good piece of information. As long as you are a son-to-son descendant of R' David Shlomo then you have the same yDNA.

You are correct that there are 5 living male son-to-son descendants of Rav Dovid Shlomo Grodzinski. They are all descendents of Yaakov Shmuel Grodzenski son of Rav Dovid Shlomo -> Shlomo (Siyoma) Grodzenski b. 1909, Vilna d. 1971 Tel Aviv (he was the only one of his siblings to survive) -> Jacob (Yasha) Gidron b. 1942, Russian Federation currently living in Israel -> He has 4 male descendants (mostly in Israel).

Chaim Shulman Did you ask about Ancestry.com DNA because you know or are related to a Grodzinski who has tested there. or where you just asking?

We do have a blood relation. My great grandfather was married to Rav Chaim Ozer's sister and after she passed away to Rav Chaim Ozer's niece - so my great great grandmother (Rysha Grodzenski Goskind) was Rav Chaim Ozer's sister and R' Dovid Shlomo's daughter.

I see. Then you and I will both have to wait, halevai.....I would still encourage you to identify your yDNA haplogroup because it may connect you with cousins who cannot be seen on AncestryDNA.

That's interesting. I'm pretty sure my grandfather was originally named Alperowitz. And I already match a number of Alperowitz's through Ancestry regular DNA. So it seems like it would be beneficial only if the other Alperowitz's will or have tested their Y-DNA.

At the moment there a 773,574 Y-DNA records on FTDNA, many of Ashkenazic origin. It's a gamble to be sure, with losses limited to the cost of the ydna testing.
