This is a follow-up to a discussion where I noted that there were two different people named Benjamin Caplan who, it's possible, I might have confused (Benjamin Caplan).

According to the Ontario death certificate (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000174312720863), Lottie Caplan née Kaminsky was born 1878-JUL-23 in Russia and died 1942-DEC-25 in St. Catharines. It seems very likely that this individual was the mother of Ida Orvitz and Freda Sautman, because the death certificate lists J.H. Sautman as her son-in-law, and the marriage licence of Ida Caplan and Abraham Orvitz (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000101284777060) lists, as maiden name of bride's mother, "Lottie Kaminsky". [Note: in the certificate part of the document, the name is written to look more like "Hattie Kaprinsky", but in the affidavit part the handwriting is slightly clearer as "Lottie Kaminsky".]

The thing I am confused about is, the entry at FindAGrave shows an Irving Caplan (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/168100251/irving-caplan) who died in 1934 at age 27, and lists his parents as Benjamin Caplan and Lottie Kaminsky Caplan.

The death notice of Ida Orvitz (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000101000223101) lists her siblings as follows: "Albert, Harry and Morris Caplan all of Toronto, Mrs. Frieda Sautman of Toronto, Jean Greenbaum of Toronto and the late Irving."

The death notice of Freda Sautman (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000100995954365) includes this: "Dear sister and sister-in-law of Minnie and the late Albert Caplan, Ruth and the late Harry Caplan, Bubbles and the late Morley Sutton, and the late Irving Caplan, Charles Caplan, Ida Orvitz, and Jean Greenbaum." Who was Charles Caplan? He is referred to as "Chuck Caplan" in the death notice of Harry Caplan (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000100998336953).

After reviewing all this, I suppose that FindAGrave is basically correct, that Benjamin and Lottie Caplan had a son named Irving Caplan who died in 1934, and is obviously a different person than the Irving Caplan who was the son of the Benjamin Caplan who died in 1967.

As for the discrepancy in date/year of death for Benjamin Caplan, with his death certificate saying 1919-DEC-31 (https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000174312599893) while his headstone says 1920-JAN-01 (https://images.findagrave.com/photos/2020/201/168100252_238e686c-25...), I suppose the most likely explanation is that he died after sundown but before midnight on New Year's Eve, and so when the date was taken in the Jewish Calendar and translated back to the civil calendar it became January 1 of 1920?

I am still curious about how/whether these people are related to Hyman Caplan (geni.com/people/Hyman-Caplan/6000000082639421130) and how they are related to Benjamin Caplan who died in 1967, father-in-law of Bernice Caplan née Yalonetsky, none of whom have entries in Geni yet.

Find-a-Grave photos of the Gravestone are valuable - at the very least, you can see what is on the Gravestone.

As for the other Information --
People make guesses and assumptions.
I have seen many errors.

According to the record on Jewish gen Harry Caplan's gravestone lists his father's hebrew name as Bentzion. The image of benjamin's tombstone you provided at https://images.findagrave.com/photos/2020/201/168100252_238e686c-25... also lists his hebrew name as Bentzion so that would suggest that that is the correct benjamin
