John Pearsall, Convict “Calcutta” 1803

The manifest of the "Calcutta" shows that John Pearsall was convicted at the Stafford Gaol Delivery on 22 July 1801 and sentenced to Life (transportation)

This is consistent with the GEDCOM comment in the Overview attached to John Pearsall's record, but is inconsistent with the comments at the start of the Overview that states John was born in London in 1791. If this date is true, John wouls be a 10 y.o. at his trial. Unlikely!

I believe the birthdate for John Pearsall, and hence probably his parents, are incorrect!

Hi Duncan,
I have his Baptism as 31 July 1977, but I do not know the actual date of his birth. There is also a document showing his indenture as a butcher's apprentice in 17 February 1786. That would make him (circa) 24 at his trial.
Unfortunately, records are scarce and that is all I currently know about him.
Pelham John Pearsall

His death record described him as age 45 in 1841 - born c1796

Can anyone find
1) A transcript from his trial
2) hulk records
3) Calcutta transportation records

The death record for 1841 is incorrect. The John Pearsall mentioned in this death record arrived aboard the "Maria" which arrived in Hobart in 1820

The death of John Pearsall in 1843 is for a 6 y.o. child; maybe John's son?

The baptismal record for John of 31 July 1777 (confirmed by FreeReg), and his trial in Stafford suggests that this is the John Pearsall in question

Still looking for details

More on the date of death..................

Noted in Maria's Obit. of 1860 that she was stated as the relict of John Pearsall, who had previously died.

John's land holdings are mentioned in Gov't Notices in 1856; but not sure whether this means he was still living?

A date between 1856 & 1860 appears possible, but cannot be found anywhere, even in the newspapers

Further confusion.................

I have added a marriage certificate to Maria Pearsall's record. It shows that she married John Pierceall in 1816, which states John's age as 25; i.e. D.O.B. 1791. This all fits with the Geni records as they stand, but.......

this brings me back to my original comment, if the date is correct, John would be 10 y.o. at his trial in 1801

Could the John Pearsall married to Maria Nichols not be Pearsall the convict?

I have searched countless records, including looking at convicts names Pearsall that may have arrived in Hobart up to 1816; there are none I could find !!

There is an error in a record somewhere, which I suspect is John's age when he married Maria

Still looking!

They did convict children and send them for transportation so it is not inconceivable that he was sent at age 10

Children as young as 9 years were transported to Australia as convicts. 20% of the transported convicts were under 20 years.

Yes, agreed; there are even references to children sent to Australia as part of the First Fleet.............BUT................

I think I have found the Hulk Record, and I have uploaded it to John Pearsall's profile.
It shows his name as John Pearcell; sentenced to Life at Stafford on 22 July 1801 (His Muster record states 22 Aug 1801; the Transportation Register indicates 22 July 1801 ), and scheduled for the "Calcutta"

The Hulk record shows John's age in 1801 as 27 y.o., so born circa 1774, approximate to the date indicated by Pelham John Pearsall, above

Are we convinced?
