My Grandfather buried in Hartlepool North Cemetery in a marked grave North gate entrance turn left 50 metres West and right turn 25 metres the grave marker is small with a name and date plaque.
I have a photograph of his daughter Elizabeth born 1845 Whitby with her daughters including my mother showing her first born Ernest 1932 five generations.
These are all in marked graves in Stranton cemetery.
David John Newton I found two marriage records for a William Spencelayh.
20 Dec 1828 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England to Mary Ann Lacy
Mar 17 1831 in Sunderland, Durham, England to Mary Coverdale
Sunderland and Whitby are about equal distance up and down the coast from Hartlepool.
All later records that I have seen so far only list either Mary or Mary Spencelayh.
It's possible that Mary Ann died and William remarried, otherwise how do we know which is the grandmother of victor?
On Geni Mary is the mother of all William's kids but on this tree https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MGGK-JYQ Mary Ann is the mother.
Never mind last post, the birth register of Thomas Coverdale Spencelayh lists his full name as Thomas Coverdale Spencelayh so i think that's pretty conclusive evidence that the 1831 Mary is victor's grandmother. Whether William married Mary Ann Lacy first is unclear, if i spot anything I'll post it here.
Hi there. Thanks for that . Thomas Coverdale Spencelayhs is buried in the North Cemetery he lost his children twins both stillborn his wife died a few days later.
Just for the record Sunderland 12. Miles from Hartlepool Whitby 50 Miles.
Records would show Hartlepool & West Hartlepool are two separate towns they amalgamated in 1967 . Hartlepool is the birthplace of Robert the Bruce . De Brus family owned the Manor and much of the land given by King Edward 1st.
Hello. I have all my family history that dates back to 1707 Frances Spencelayh born in a small village on the outskirts of Whitby 'Hawsker'.
The family were Sail-makers eventually travelling to Hartlepool to ply their trade John Spencelayh being the father of William 1808 -1889. making tents after sailing ships were no longer viable for the armed forces.
Incidentally the name crops up in the Novel Dracula.. When the ship washed up on the rocks the hound ran up the 199 stairs to the abbey on the cliff top stopping at the Spencelayh gravestone. I have a colour photograph of the headstone.
