Hi. My father was from Bohemia. His haplogroup is I-Z16983. My last name is Křiž. He once had a local professor "trace" the name back to 1300. But actual documentary evidence only goes back to about 1800.To my Dad's knowledge he was 100% Czech. From what I can tell, the most recent family history is in South Bohemia.

My 23andme results suggest roughly the following

35% Eastern Europe
5% Scandinavian
5% Broadly European
2% French-German
1% Ashkenazi Jewish (I think, though this is an area of overlap with Mom's DNA)
1% Broadly NW European

My Mom's DNA is quite distinct though when it is gets to 1% or less admixture, there may be overlap.

I am just connecting here. I have lots of questions but. really. do not know where to begin or what I seek other than general knowledge. I am open to any and all advice.

Cheers, Peter

It's interesting that your father was from Bohemia. Mine was from Greece. Same haplogroup: I-Z16983. For such a rare haplogroup, it seems pretty widespread. By the way, the Czech Republic is great. I went there in my 20s, about 24 years ago. I still have the subway announcement stuck in my head.

sorry for the long delay. Czechia is pretty cool. I need to spend more time there. There is a Balkan origin story with the slavs. I wonder when they arrived in the Czechlands.
