Hi,

According to this source https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/ecco/004896980.0001.000/1:212?rgn=div1...

the father of Sir John de Ros (1391-1447) is John de Ros 1365-1413 and this would be his GENI page Sir John Ross of Halkhead, Kt.

In the above mentioned document Sir John de Ros (1391-1447) is the IX. Sir JOHN Ross of Halkhead.

Kind regards,

Nicolas Fogelholm

VIII. Sir JOHN, who, in a donation of A∣dam Fullerton of Crosby to the monastery of Paisley,* is designed Johannes Ross, dominus de Halkhead, anno 1392.

In a donation of sir John Blair of Adam∣ston to the same monastery,*dominus Johannes de Ross, miles, dominus de Halkhead, is a wit∣ness, anno 1397.

He married Agnes, daughter and sole heir∣ess of sir John Melvile of that ilk,* by whom he got a great accession to his estate, particu∣larly the lands, barony, and castle of Melvile, in Mid Lothian, &c.

By her he had a son,

IX. Sir JOHN Ross of Halkhead, who succeeded him, and was appointed heretable constable of the castle of Renfrew,* with pow∣er to uplift the customs at the principal fairs of the burgh; which office continued long in the family.

He got a charter under the great seal,* of the lands and barony of Melvile, as heir to his mother, anno 1401; and the family, in consequence of this marriage, have continued to quarter the arms of Melvile with those of Ross ever since.

He died in the beginning of the reign of king James II. and was succeeded by his son,

Ok so you do not think we can find Sir John de Ros (1391-1447) father?

This source below also indicates that his father would be Sir John Ross of Halkhead, Kt. or am I wrong?

Yes, Nicolas Karl-Gustav Fogelholm, agreed and done. Nick, and Private UserM does the biography look right to you?

I’m a bit confused by the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ross-9929 narrative.

wife of John Ross - “sole heir of John Melville of that Ilk”

Can we find him?

Ah - never mind, it’s a time traveling Agnes Melville.

John Eoss, son of Agnes Melville of that ilk, was retoured heir to his mother in the barony of Melville on 16th May 1496, although he was apparently in pos- session of the estate in 1490. 2 That retour and the other writs cited prove the inaccuracy of the hitherto accepted genealogies of the family of Eoss, Lord Eoss. Some peerage-writers state that the heiress of Melville married Sir John Eoss of Halkhead, knight, who lived in the years 1392 and 1397, and also that their son, Sir John Eoss, received a charter of the barony of Melville as early as the year 1401. Both these statements are entirely erroneous. Sir John Eoss, the alleged husband of the heiress, and Sir John Eoss, her alleged son, were respectively the great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather of Eobert Eoss, her husband, who was eldest son of Sir John Eoss of Halkhead, but who predeceased his father. Sir John Eoss, afterwards first Lord Eoss, whom these peerage-writers divide into two persons, flourished as early as the year 1449, and till between 1490 and 1500, and was succeeded by his grandson, also Sir John Eoss, the son of Agnes Melville, who was the second Lord Eoss, and was killed at Flodden on 9th September 1513.

Erica, all the capital Rs came out as capital Es. Oopsie....

Eh, that’s just a copy paste for discussion. The real Melville is properly placed downtree - I’ll try to make sure Fraser is uploaded to them from the digitized version of the printed page.

Does she have the wrong father?

Agnes Melville of that Ilk

(This tree had really gotten messed up ...)

The Melville’s start here.

Galfridus de Melville, Sheriff of Edinburgh

Agnes is from the main branch and it had gotten mixed up with the cadet Raith branch.
