I contacted Graham Holton at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, UK regarding a genetic research project that was done to identify descendants of the signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath. If you are a direct male descendant of these men, you are welcome to contribute your genetic results to the project. The project is finished, but they are still accepting contributions to enhance the findings. (Be aware that paternity fraud does occur, so some people discover that their paternity is not what they had been told and believed.)
Related to this study is a project endeavored to rightly define the Seton family tree. There are disagreements about who is who due to similar names, titles, etc.
Here is the email I received:
Thanks for your e-mail. The major work on the Project has now been completed, but research will be continuing and if you are aware of any other male line descendants of the Seton/Seaton family who have taken a Y-DNA test or would like to do so, we would be interested to hear. The student you refer to is Philip Stead, who is one of the Administrators of the Seaton/Seton DNA Project at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/seton/about
The Report on our Project was published on Monday 30 November and can be obtained from the Foundation for Medieval Genealogy at https://fmg.ac/shop/bookshop
If you have further information relevant to this research, I would be pleased to hear of this.
Best wishes,
Graham
