Hello Everyone,
In Meorei Galicia by Meir Wunder (Chief Librarian at Hebrew U), Isaiah Schorr is listed as the son-in-law of Zeev Hanadiv of Tarnaruda, and not his son.
According to Meorei Galicia (by Meir Wunder), Isaiah Schorr had two wives. One was the daughter of Zeev Hanadiv of Tarnaruda. The other was Miriam daughter of Rabbi Yosef Yoska of Volochysk, son of Mordechai of Kremintz.
From what Kevin Lawrence Hanit has found in Dr. Rosenstein's book "the Unbroken Chain" 3rd edition, it says that Zeev Hanadiv married the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Yoska of Volochysk. Meaning it was not Zeev's daughter, but Zeev himself. This is what is currenlty reflected on the tree on Geni.com.
So was it Isaiah Shor who married the daughter of R'YY, or Zeev Hanadiv?
Rabbi Yosef Yoska of Volochysk
Harav Yishayahu Shor ABD Yassi
Also, can someone confirm in the 3rd edition of the Unbroken chain that is correct. And can someone confirm which of these sources has the correct lineage?
Thank you
Binny Lewis
In the intro to Isaiah Shor's book, Chazon Yeshaya, it says that he married the daughter of Zev of Tarnoruda. (p.) and it says that his second wife was Miryam the daughter of Yosef Yuska of Woloczyska son of Mordechai of Kremnetz who he calls father-in-law (chasni) in his letter.
The intro also says that Isaiah Shor was a grandson of the Baal Shem tov, but the author is not sure how. So he suggests that maybe Yosef Yuska married the daughter of Moshe Chaim Efraim Ashkenazi, author of Degel Machneh Efraim, grandsom of the B"esht.
Whether this is true or not, it goes to show that the auther is not familiar with any spouse of Yosef Yuska, and it confirms that it was in fact Isaiah Shor that married the daughter of Zev of Tarnoruda.
Additionally, the book lists all of his children as follows:
1) Freida Keila married to first husband Rabbi Leibish Taubes, son of Moshe Chaim of town of Raz?la (son of Yitzchak Isaak of Kaalov) and Reizla daughter of Zvi Hirsch of Zidhitshov auther of Ateret Tzvi. (Leibish Taubes died age 22). Second husband was Rabbi Yaakov Hager, son of Rabbi Dovd Hager of Zabludow/Zablutow, author of Tzemach Dovid (a grandson of Menachem Mendel Hager of Kosov).
1a) Freida Keila had a child from first husband = Nechli, who married Menachem Mendel Hager of Zabludow.
2) Devorah who married Baruch son of Yosef Yoske of Woloczysk son of Mordechai of Kremnetz.
2a) Sarah who married Nachman - a grandson of Rabbi Yaakov Yosef of Ostroh and Rabbi Nachman of Breslov
2b) Batya (or Basya) married twice. First husband was Rabbi Menachem Mendel Landau/Landa son of Yom Tov Lipa Landa the ABD of Galatz son of Yosef Landau/Landa ABD of Litin and later was ABD of Iasi. (This Menachem Mendel was sometimes referred to as “grandson” and sometimes as “son-in-law” - these were signs of endearment - the author gives many examples). The second husband of Batya was Rabbi Yisroel ABD of Horishov who was a grandson of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berdichev
3) The only son of Isaiah Shor was named Dovid Mordechai who married the daughter of Rabbi Yosef Landau ABD of Litin and later in Iasi. This Dovid Mordechai authored the sefer Birkat Yosef - Q&A written to his father.
3a) Malchi Chaya married Dovid Landau/Landa a grandson of Fischel Landau ABD of Munkacz and a grandson of Rabbi Levi Isaac of Berdichev.
I found two sources today in the Unbroken Chain for Isaiah Shor's other two son's in law - Joseph Landau and Aryeh Leib Wahrman.
Though I suspect that Joseph Landau is another mistake since according to the above, Isaiah Shor's son married the daughter of Joseph Landau.
I would recommend removing that connection, but will wait for great minds to weigh in.
In the meanwhile, I've updated the tree to reflect Zev Hanadiv as the father in law of Isaiah Shor (additionally, someone else has already gone and added Moshe Chaim Efraim Ashkenazi as the father-in-law of Yosef Yoske. I wonder what the sources are).
